Paladin Double Smite?

So I just had a paladin join my group and I found a combo that seems crazy powerful but I can't find a reason it doesn't work.

Paladin casts a smite spell (mine used Thunderous Smite) which is a bonus action. The spell does not expend until an attack is landed or concentration is broken. Once you hit you also activate Divine Smite, which takes no action at all.

Granted, this burns through spell slots quickly, but even with lv 1 slots this is at least an additional +2d6+2d8. At 5th they can attack again, possible burn another divine smite and at lv 11 they add another 1d8 no matter what.

Am I reading all this right? It just seems so close to OP cheating that I can't believe it.

yeah. But notice how quickly the spells vanish. They dont have the slots to keep it up. They can vanquis the BBEG, but are less effective then a fighter at multiple minons at the time. Also, if your paladin does do all that smiting, at 5th level, two attacks, smite spell every turn, divine smite on extra attacks, you will loose all your spells vanish very quickly.

bawylie's dwarf paladin, Hungry Hippolyto, double-smote my villain, Tetanus the Transgmogrifier, in The Corrosion of Gedren's Point. I cried myself to sleep that night.

Yeah, its a fairly common combo, but if the fight is going to last a few rounds, still better to stick with just Divine Smite.

Also remember, the Thunderous Smite can be heard for 300'....  nothing like announcing your there....

Yeah having seen a vengeance GWF in action, I believe smite should have been a bonus action, not a nothing action.

It would limit their nova a little, which I think is desirable once you get 5th+ and 2 attacks each round.

A level 5 Sorcerer can hit with a fireball for 8D6 damage.

So Mr. Paladin isn't that much of a rock star.
