One of the players in my Legacy of the Crystal Shard campaign group is playing a halfling wild mage. For her Call to Action, he chose "On the Run", with the explanation that his PC got into some trouble with a secretive group of halfling supremacists. He's written up a detailed account of this group, which he has dubbed "Fate's Hand". Here's a summary, complete with a few quotes from his write-up:
They are a small group, consisting of fewer than ten active members (eg. only a "handful"). Their MO is "solidly within the bounds of subterfuge and espionage", with most members realizing "it will take a while to achieve their goal" of steering the course of Faerûn's "politics and direction to a point where individuals chosen by fate succeed and are recognized in society to be better than others".
The leader is a halfling named Tom Darkleaf. His righthand halflings are Lyle Thornweave, who "provides magical support should anything 'unexpected' come up", and Seraphina Tallowhill, who "bloodily eliminates threats to the goal". These three and their fellows each have their own motivations, which range from "just using [the organization] as an excuse for violence to mad hairbrained [sic] schemes of twisting, distorting or 'tainting' luck itself (somehow). Everyone is in it for themselves [but] have enough of a common ideal not to destroy each other."
This group initially involved itself with the PC's brother when they found out he was a wild mage. He balked and tried to run but was captured by the group. Seraphina was sent to murder his family while he watched via Lyle's scrying. Lavinia, the PC, managed to escape the slaughter, however, and fled Luskan on the last caravan to Icewind Dale for the season. Unbeknownst to Lavinia, Seraphina has followed her to Bryn Shander with murder in her heart ...
For Seraphina's stats, I've taken the CR 8 assassin in the back of the MM and added the halfling traits. The PCs are all currently 4th level but there are six of them, so I figure they can take her. The question is, what might be the best way to have it go down?
I'm thinking of throwing in a little foreshadowing by having Lavinia spot Seraphina in a crowd during the day at some point. Either that or just say that Lavinia feels like she's being watched or something. Then I was thinking that Seraphina might track Lavinia to wherever she's staying and try to assassinate her in her sleep.
I'm open to other ideas, though.
- Do you think Seraphina would hire some local goons to help her out (or have some of her fellow [named or unnamed] Fate's Hand associates accompany her), or does she seem like more of a loner to you?
- Aside from poison, what other tricks do you think she might have up her sleeve?
Cheers, Jonathan |

Make the PC into a potted plant (preferably something tropical, if THAT can be arranged), permanently. Then steal the plant one night and leave it outside during a snowstorm. Steal a sack of gems, too, as cover for your real purpose. That ought to take care of the pesky PC without drawing excessive unwanted attention (after the hue and cry over a Missing Persons report is filed) to the assassin's presence and activities. |
