Hello Community.

I'm somewhat experienced with the D&D world and have decided to run my first campaign as DM for 5e. However, one of my players has decided that he wants to run as an Alchemical Golem. His backstory is that he was a mad mage who was trying to become immortal (as a lich or something, I can't remember) but had ultimately failed and chose to implant his consciousness into his Alchemical Golem. I'm totally down for this idea because he won't be joining us for the start of the campaign. He'll join about halfway in so I can work him in the story. The only problem I have (due to inexperience) is that I'm not quite sure what kind of stat buffs/debuffs, proficiencies/deficiences, etc. I should give/allow. So if anyone wants to help us build a golem, I'm all ears. Thanks!

Wait just a brief while longer? We will soon have free WotC material that includes official 5e Warforged rules...

Sounds like a race to me. I'd suggest using another race as a framework, then tweaking the racial benefits. You can also look at the 4E Warforged as an example.

Will the player still be playing a standard class, or does he want custom everything? If the Alchemical Golem retains the arcane knowledge of his former self, then it can be a wizard. If it wants to punch things with big metal hands, it can be a monk. If it wants to swing a massive weapon, make it a fighter. Heck, there's no reason a huge metal Alchemical Golem can't be a ranged class and use a giant crossbow.

Before you design anything, or make any adjustments, try figuring out more specifics about what they want to do with this character. You'll need to know what the vision in their head is.
