I'm looking to transfer the characters in my current campaign from Pathfinder to D&D 5E. One of those characters is a tengu rogue and the player wants (if possible) to keep playing the tengu. I had toyed with cursing the character and turning him into a halfling but this is a last resort. I realise that the tengu is a Pathfinder race and probably equates to the kenku in D&D terms. Can anyone think of what kind of racial traits these tengu (or kenku) might have? Thanks in advance

What traits do tengu have in PF?

Legend-wise, they can fly, alter self, and are probably good at Int and Str. Wood or High Elf racial traits from 5e would match their affinity for swords, magical trickery, and speed quite well.

Having played a kenku in 3rd edition d&d and translated it to a Pathfinder tengu, I had the opposite problem. In d&d, kenku had the ability to mimic any sort of sound they heard. This ability was dropped for some reason by the developers of the tengu for Pathfinder, which I thought was a shame.

I would just write up a tengu race that was balanced with the other races. They are pretty simple.

Mechanically, it would probably be something like:

+2 Dexterity

+1 Wisdom

Sword Trained: you are proficient with any  of the following weapons: scimitar, short sword, long sword, rapier, greatsword.

Natural linguist: add three additional languages of your choice. You have advantage on Intelligence checks to decipher codes and unknown languages.

Mimicry: You can mimic sounds you hear and have advantage when making deception checks that involve your use of this mimicry.

Beak: You can use your beak as an attack that does 1d4 points of damage. You can use this beak attack to make off hand attacks with your bonus action.

Note that I added back in the mimicry of Kenku, because it goes with the natural linguist ability and is fun. I also got rid of the +2 to stealth and perception, because it doesn't really do anything for the character that is interesting and doesn't make particular sense. If the character has alternate racial traits, you would have to make up how those worked. The all look doable.

If you wanted to go whole hog, I would create a couple of subraces. One for mountain top (eagle) tengu, and one for bright plumed (parrot) tengu. Eagle tengu would get +1 wis, and bright plumed tengu would get +1 int, and the linguist trait would go to the bright plumed tengu, while the eagle tengu might get some other trait, like the glide alternate racial trait perhaps.

I like it.

I also don't think every race needs to have subraces. Really, being an elf, or a dragonborn, or a tengu should be special enough without needing to be a Snow Elf, an Electrum Dragonborn, or a Long-Thin-Blade Tengu. Just my $0.02.
