I made a couple rulings at Encounters last night and I'd like some second opinions.

Context: Peryton assault, two party members taken for a ride in the sky.

Part 1: Wizard falls from about 30-35 feet up, Rogue (mounted) charges in to attempt to catch him.

Mechanic: DC15 Strength (Athletics)

-Success: Rogue makes it in time and catches the Wizard, reducing the falling damage.

-Failure: Rogue makes it in time and catches the wizard, reducing the falling damage, but the Rogue is dismounted and left prone while his mount continues running.

Part 2: Cleric ends up in the same situation as above, but he's ~100 feet up. By this time, the Rogue has hopped onto his ally's mount to cover the distance.

Mechanic: DC15 Strength (Athletics)

-Success: Rogue cushions the fall of the cleric, sharing the falling damage and ending up prone.

-Failure: The Rogue doesn't make it in time and the Cleric's fate is left in the Gods' hands (Death).

For myself, the first falls within the realm of cinematic fun. The second feels like a bit of a stretch, but I often lean toward the player's benefit. In hindsight, I think the second instance's DC should have been higher or impossible.

What do you think?

They sound fine. I might have made that an Intelligence check potentially for judging the time to intercept the wizard/cleric just right or perhaps a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check to spur the mount beyond its normal limits to get beneath the wizard/cleric before it was too late. It depends on the player's approach, of course, but it sounds like "getting there in time" was the uncertainty, not necessarily the rogue's Strength or athletic ability. Maybe the mount takes damage from the cleric as well.

How did it turn out for the characters? How did the players take the ruling?
