| #1CFKMar 11, 2015 2:45:22 | Can up in the last session, where our warlock wanted to buy a spell scroll.
What would be a good price for a spell scroll, containing a new spell? Personaly I suggested 100GP * level(square), and for cantrips 100gp. (So a 3rd level spell costs 900gp, 4th costs 1600)
Needless to say not all spells can be bought, some need an adventure to require. |

The DMG covers suggested price ranges through combination of the scroll rarities listed on page 200, and the value ranges by rarity on page 135, with the suggestion that consumable items typically have half the value.
As such, here are the price ranges suggested, taking all the above into account:
Cantrip or 1st-level: 25-50 gp 2nd- or 3rd-level: 50-250 gp 4th- or 5th-level: 250.5-2,500 gp 6th-, 7th- or 8th-level: 2,500.5-25,000 gp 9th-level: 25,000.5+ gp
In my own campaign world, I favor lower prices on 5th-level and lower spell scrolls because they are within the realm of what various NPCs can create (there aren't many NPCs in my setting above 10th level), and extremely high prices on 6th-level and higher spell scrolls because they are exceedingly rare and highly sought after so the seller doesn't have any worry that asking too high a price will mean not making a sale because there is nowhere else for someone to get that scroll - so I use the following costs:
Cantrip or 1st-level: 25 gp 2nd- or 3rd-level: 50 gp 4th- or 5th-level: 250 gp 6th- through 8th-level: 15,000 gp as a "special discount"/it's your lucky day price, 25,000 gp otherwise. 9th-level: Bidding on this auction piece will open at 30,000 gp (meaning that there is not really any hope of simply going and buying exactly the spell you happen to want, because such scrolls are far too rare for that) |

Stupid me I only looked into the PHB to find out... |

However, even rare items have a clientelle, like rare art as desibed in the DMG, so I wanted some place the players could go. I created a magica shop in Skullport in Undermountain. A place for people in the know and with gold to spare can find the rare and wondrous. Bit of an adventure for the PC's to get there and find it, and it was a load of fun. Two lists of items the shop provides for customers are. I used some of Arons ideas
