| #1ivstinJun 18, 2015 20:12:37 | You knew it was coming. I'm sure there are at least six other threads about Raptors that I haven't found. Here's the raptor I made for our table. Keeping in mind the actual velociraptor was about the size of a wolf, or a panther, I used the Panther as the base monster and modified it. If you check it against p.274 DMG, it'll be about a CR 1. ;)
Velociraptor Medium beast, unaligned Armor Class 14 Hit Points 26 (4d8 +8) Speed 60 ft. Str 17 (+3) Dex 18 (+4) Con 14 (+2) Int 3 (-4) Wis 12 (+1) Cha 10 (+0) Skills Perception +3, Stealth +6 Senses passive Perception 13 Languages -- Challenge 1 (200 XP)
Pack Tactics. the raptor has advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of the raptor's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.
Pounce. If the raptor moves at least 30 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a claw attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the raptor can make one bite attack against it as a bonus action.
Actions Bite.Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) piercing damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) slashing damage.
Justifications For DCs and Damage Velociraptors might be fast with their attacks, but to pounce upon something and force it ot the ground is still strength based; therefore the DC is 13 rather than 14.
The claw attack is described as the defining feature of a velociraptor, rather than its bite. Therefore, the damage for the claw is 2d4, rather than 1d4, and includes the high dexterity. Velociraptors use dexterity for attacks rather than strength because of their quick birdlike reflexes.
Velociraptors are pack hunters, like wolves, and therefore "herd the target into a kill zone." Pounce was given because historical accounts of Velociraptors (Mongolia Protoceratops vs Velociraptor) and movie accounts of the same identify the raptors as creatures that would likely pounce upon targets rather than stand toe to toe.
I hope you enjoy this new monster and use it as much as you want.

I understand where the result is coming from, but I feel that a +4 is more appropriate. Especially when the thing has Pounce. |
| #4RazintarrJun 19, 2015 8:02:48 | Nice Jurassic Park raptor. Maybe bump the intelligence up to 4 to account for how smart they're credited to be in the movies.
Addition: it does have a high to-hit, which doesn't seem to be accounted for in its CR. Taking pounce into account it deals 11 damage on average, which puts it in the CR 1 category. CR 1 has a attack bonus of +3. The raptor has a +6 and the pack tactics raises that to +7. That raises it's offensive CR to 3. Defensive CR is 1/8. The average would still be a CR 1, but be carefull while using it against low-level parties. That offensive CR can down bring down a fighter or kill a wizard with a few lucky dicerolls, before the party can even act. |

| #8dave2008Jun 19, 2015 10:34:27 | Quick question: you are going for the movie version of velociraptors I assume? I ask because you mentioned real velociraptors and the famous mongolian fossil. If so, this is much to large and strong. A real velociraptor (https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Velociraptor) topped out about 30-40lbs. That is closer to a big house cat than a wolf or panther. And definitely not STR 17.
I think what you got is closer to the movie version or a deinonychus than a velociraptor. I like what you got, pounce is greate, I would just call it a raptor and leave it at that. |

| #15transcendantviewerJun 19, 2015 22:17:09 | The only problem with giving something as intelligent as a raptor something like Pounce, they'll be smart enough to leave as fast as possible if things didn't go down as planned. |

| #25JenksJun 22, 2015 13:29:59 | In case people were wondering, Deinonychus is the raptor that Jurassic Park is modeling. But deinonychus is hard to spell and doesnt sound as cool as velociraptor. Even then, they are still a bit bigger than they were in real life. Their size in the Lost World is a little closer. |
| #26ivstinJun 23, 2015 11:24:19 | Well, I was thinking about giving them a +20 to hit, because they have to roll a 1 to miss (... they are Raptors, guys... nothing beats a Raptor except a juvenile female gymnist).
I could see a reduction in Str to 14 and Dex to 16 as a balancing act if the hit is too high. :-) Then further reducing the Juvvy Raptors to 12 and 14 respectively. It would change stealth, too.
Love the Clever Girl entry.
If we go book style, they should also get some kind of Keep Fighting ability after having a leg blown off.
This thread has made my day, thanks for all the feedback on the raptors and the great jokes. |
