Not something I necessarily intend to do but always looked like an interesting adventure. |

I don't think adapting is that impossible if like you say you keep track of the changes
Swap the half dragon hobgoblin for a Vos Awnshelien. Cult of Tiamat...cult of Kriesha (or even Azrai) Goblin Horde...Vos horde.
And so on. .The adventure framework can be kept just the coat needs changing |

I put Phandelin in the Grand Duchy of Geoff, and have RHod set up south of Geoff in Sterich, replacing Brindol with Mittleberg. I stole the idea from someone else' campaign I saw online somewhere. |

Not easy to just grab the MM. If someone is really ambitious, could meld RHOD with Lost Mines, make the town the same as Greenrest, perhaps have the caravan come from Brindol. Will require quite a few changes on the overland map obviously.

In addition, I changed the hobgoblins out for orcs. Kahrn is now an orc that was assigned by King Obould Many-arrows to protect the trade route through the vale and help maintain the Treaty of Garumn's Gorge. However, he became corupt by the local planer diety influence and decided to summon an avatar of that diety and run an army across the vale. Your diety may be Tiamat. Mine is Mephistopheles due to PC backgrounds.
Conversion time is dependant on how you want to think about it. Substitution of creatures from the 5e MM is not too bad. Down scaling or up scaling the dragons to meet encounter difficulty is not difficult. I have made extensive use of the DMG tables to create creatures as I adjust orcs to a higher level. Some of the more difficult conversions include the monks and bard with the Ghostloard. I have not completed converting part 4 and part 5.
We're planning to use use the Ultimate Campaign book for the army on army combat rather than running a point total as is suggested in the adventure book.
Thus far, chapters 1&2, there has been a lot of good character development. The use of dragons is interesting in the adventure. The dragon at the bridge encounter is fairly low level, and can subcome to a grapple / prone beat down. This allowed the players to get over confident. The second dragon at Rhest was more difficult, and had Misty Step. This lead to a near TPK, and great heroics.
This adventure does a great job of spicing up encounters with different environmental factors. The first chapter uses a small dungeon crawl and the encounter at the bridge. The encounter on the bridge is interesting in that it's an out door encounter and gravity can play a significant role. The encounter at Rhest involves a lot of water. This can lead to some intersting underwater combat. Part 3 involves undead and is another dungeon crawl. Part 4 is an open field battle against very large creatures. Part 5 is a dungeon crawl against a fortification with patrols.
I'm giving out one level per chapter. The amount of XP per chapter is about right after the encounters are scaled for the number of players. |
