Example: Lvl 7 Frenzy/rage Barbarian with a 16str would be dishing out 12d6 + 28(rage,str,weapon bonus) per round while raging, with advantage!
Weapon 2d6 Attuned +2d6 3 attacks
64 average dmg per round with a high probability of not missing? |

Veteran DMs will generally know better, but the fact that they don't give any notes on how to use the item is rather lame. I could see it becoming an issue in such games. |

+1 and 1d6 necrotic damage without attunment: Not gamebreaking.
All the cool stuff when attuning: Hazirawn is intelligent and in charge of its powers. So maybe even an evil character might use time and energy to increase the sympathy the swords feels about him/her.
The simple way to avoid getting players to attune themself to the item is: Let Hazirawn suggest attuning it by itself. When Hazirawn tell them a bit about the power in waiting for them and the players makes a Wisdom (Insight) roll DC 10 to get the feeling, that it might not be the best idea to do, what an evil swords tells you to do, most players will get cautios. If not, then let Hazirawn unattune itself, when the wielder is performin good natured deeds or even do creepy stuff while said character is sleeping. A weapon which always points at your throat when waking up, regardless of how you stow it away, will most likely do the job. Especially if the point comes closer each day.
It's a powerful weapon, but even with all its powers it's for the moment the strongest weapon in a campaign (until RoT, I think), but there were other powerful items in the playtest and comes quite close to Hazirawn. The only thing I'd be worried about is the fact, that no other magic item in HotDQ is nearly as powerful, which means, that the wielder might go ahead for some time. But like I said: Either granting only some access or using the evil alignment to its fullest should do the job. |
