Also considering House Ruling a couple adjustments to some spells. For instance off the top of my head, mage armor. Considering having the AC be 10 + proficiency + Dex. Or sheild adding Int mod to AC.
Meh? |
| #2cyberpunkAug 30, 2014 10:20:23 | rituals for all spells will completely unbalance casters, and make ritual casting a must have feat(which is bad). I'll let others delve into better explanations as to why it's a bad idea, but with true polymorph I'd be able to create 10-16 lackies a day. 1 a day when you can spare the spell slot is pretty powerful, but that is crazy, you could have a complete mercenary force in a week, after a year an army.
Mage armor isn't a bad rule. |
| #3Captain_KoboldAug 30, 2014 12:24:17 | I'd say no. There are definitely spells that could have been made rituals, but weren't, in the PHB. I believe that one of the reasons why was to ensure using them actually took resources (spell slots). |
| #4Brodomir_RumblegutAug 30, 2014 14:46:42 | How about any self or utility spells (meaning no attack roll or saving throw as part of the spell), and boost cast time up to 10 minutes if normally less? Also, if the spell calls for concentration, it is still required. |
| #5Thoughts_My_AimAug 30, 2014 14:51:08 | As others have pointed out, some spells *really* need a spell slot to rein them in. Teleportation, for example, becomes a whole lot more powerful if you can keep recasting the damned thing until you get bang on your target. Animate Dead would be *terrifying* if a Necromancer could cast it six times an hour for free.
Wierdly it's actually the utility spells that are the most dangerous here. Allowing *combat* spells to be cast as rituals would barely unbalance things at all, because while unlimited Meteor Swarms *sounds* cool, it isn't like you can afford to take a hundred rounds of combat to cast each one. Heck, in terms of damage per cast time, you'd be better off spamming cantrips. |

| #8TimmeeSep 01, 2014 12:29:26 | I dig. It makes things more balanced. It just seems logically inappropriate. Someone mind throwing out a fantasy-setting reason as to why all spells cannot be ritually cast? What would the master conjurer say to the apprentice when asked that question?
"Stop asking silly questions." "You know, I asked my teacher the same question." Walks away in thought, leaving the apprentice alone in the room. "Some magic is too powerful to be so controlled."
What ya got? |
| #9SpedGuySep 01, 2014 15:13:38 | I agree that some utility magic is just silly if you can do it on command.
That being said, there are several spells that are not rituals that wouldn't be terribly unbalancing to be made so; for example some of the combat-focused magic that could be good as rituals for large-scale combat (where during a long battle with enough combatants, a fireball every 10 minutes would pay off more than three in a minute); and might even make for a cool battle-scene backdrop to some adventuerers. Developing a ritual-version of some spells might just be possible if one looked at it on a spell-by-spell basis. Who knows, maybe the Mageocracy holds some of its power thanks to the secret of the Ritual Lightning-bolt that normal spellcasters don't know (and players are sent by a neighboring King to steal?) |
| #10MonsterEnvySep 01, 2014 15:25:42 | Yeah it's a bad idea. Don't do it. Seriously it's a really horrible idea. |

| #12RustedKitsuneSep 03, 2014 2:34:04 | Some spells make sense as rituals; see the 8 hour version of Plant Growth. Others don't (combat spells are a good example, as is Wish, and various other high-powered spells). Sure, some spells could be done as rituals - but does it make sense for them to have a ritual version?
