I am thinking of making a encounter based off of the Scylla & Charybdis theme but not as a fight but as a escape/avoid type of encounter similar to a skill chalange in 4E. My main concern is that the party will attempt to fight the Rock/Hard Place and die rapidly. I plan to give the party plenty of checks and background info to help determin that these areas are very deadly but still the fear is there.
Background:
Lvl 2 party of 5
"Rock" 1/2 stat Hydra "Hard Place" 20-30 vultures fighting over a dead horse
This is a desert setting and the Hydra is going to be converted to desert Hydra. I am hopeing the party will try to navigate/sneak through the pass rather than fight. This is intended to be a quick encounter to use there skills rather than fight.
Has anyone run a non-fight "encounter" with overwelming odds and how did the players recieve the "encounter"? |

Just make it clear to the players (directly if you feel you must) that fighting the beast is not a viable solution - it's off the table completely. Then set the goal and stakes to something else, placing suitable obstacles in the characters' path. Ask "What do you do?" and adjudicate their actions accordingly with an eye toward the goals of play. |
