I'm not sure what silk armor is. What culture used it, and in what time period?

Light armor. Just rename leather and such. I don't know exactly how protective silk is by comparison, but as far as I can tell, it's mostly just for ranged weapons. So it could provide a small static damage reduction, or +1 or 2 AC, against ranged weapons only, and otherwise be leather armor.

Are we talking actual layered protective armour made only of silk, the actual armour type that used silk as a backing material, or just the trick with the silk shirts to aid the removal or arrows that hit you but didn't kill you?

 

Pure silk armour is pretty solidly padded cloth, armour that used silk as a backing could be "studded leather", scale, or similar.
