| #1OnelostroadAug 01, 2015 18:07:50 | So, at the end of Hoard of the Dragon Queen, my players managed to capture Skyreach Castle.
Now I'm sure they're going to want to fly that thing all over the Sword Coast.
The next adventure states that the giants are going to want the castle back which is fine. I'm sure the cult probably wants it back too.
My question for my fellow DMs that perhaps know the Forgotten Realms better than I is this:
What's likely to happen when the players decide to fly Skyreach Castle toward and/or over a major city such as Neverwinter or Baldur's Gate? What would the reactions be of the ruling class and/or the city's population? What powerful characters from inside these cities would react to such an event?
Thanks for the help! |

In my campaign, the PCs cleared most of the Cult forces then gave the Giant King an inspiring speech; he and they together attacked the dragon in his basement. I showed the PCs the map and said "The Giant King is going here -point to glacier- to raise an army of Giants. He'll drop you off somewhere. Where do you want?" They picked Neverwinter, so I did some calculations and figured they would travel all night and arrive just before dawn. Nobody important saw their drop-off. I let the Giant King figure out the details to maintain his flying castle's security and stealth.
However, Tiamat briefly discusses the possibility that the PCs keep control of the castle.

All authorties would be very cautious, seeing a flying fortress as a threat. A call to rally flying troops and champions would go out. Pcs would have to do some talking to ease threatened leaders. Capturing Skyreach Castle and the treasure hoard within would attract a lot of attenton. I would send a company of giants led by a cloud giantto recapture Skyreach. I would also send a company of elite cultist with a dragon or even riding young dragons to recapture Skyreach and its treasure for the cultist.
Capturing Skyreach Castle was quite the feat, I'm guessing when our group gets to that point, it will end up smashed against Greypeak Mountains. although with DnD you never know. I would give them the win and let them enjoy thier price before having them fight for it. Maybe they could use it as a mobile base of operation. If they can hold on to it until the end then they have another boon in the final battle against the cultist The capture and use of Skyreach Castle would remain on enduring deed of renown in the lore surrounding the heroes and the ar of the Dragon Queen for generations. |
