| #1supreme_slayerApr 12, 2015 21:34:43 | So, for a homebrew game of mine, I was going to offer some unique items to my players after a certain point for their characters. However, before doing this, I thought I'd run it past all of you guys, and maybe you could help me stop from giving OP items to them, or maybe help inspire you for some items.
Item Name --- Description --- Category --- Damage Dice --- Properties --- Cost
Gythka -- A two-handed polearm with a blade at each end -- Martial Melee Weapon -- 1d8 slashing -- Two-Handed, Finesse, Special (A character with either the Dual Wielder or Polearm Master feats may make an attack with the other side of this weapon as a Bonus Action, using the same weapon damage, in addition to gaining the other benefits of those feats while using this weapon.) -- 75gp
Chatkcha/Chakram -- A flat, triangular wedge with three serated blades./ A circular, bladed throwing weapon -- Martial Ranged Weapon -- 1d6 slashing -- Light, Finesse, Thrown (30/120ft) -- 25gp
Mancatcher -- A polearm with a pronged head designed to pin down or capture. -- Martial Melee Weapon -- 1d4 bludgeoning -- Two Handed, Reach, Special (If you hit a Medium or Small creature with this weapon, you may attempt a Grapple. While grappling a creature this way, you may move the target adjacent to you or keep them within this weapon's reach, and you cannot attack creatures with this weapon except the grappled creature.) -- 25gp
Shield Arm -- A massive gauntlet that partially acts as a shield by way of a flat surface covering the forearm -- Martial Melee Weapon -- 1d4 bludgeoning -- Special (Gain +1 AC while wielding this weapon. This weapon cannot be disarmed and requires an Action to remove. A +1, +2, etc weapon of this kind does not provide additional AC) -- 150gp
Shield Glaive -- At first it is a simple sword and shield, but activation of a mechanism makes it becomes a glaive. -- Magical Shield and Martial Weapon -- Special (This item functions as a normal shield and longsword. However, the wielder may use a Bonus Action to combine the shield and sword into a Glaive, following the same statistics for that item. It requires an Action to return the Glaive to shield and longsword form.) -- Uncommon Magical Item (~200gp)
Lantern Shield -- A shield with a design resempling a lantern on the front, which glows like one when activated -- Magical Shield -- +2 AC -- Special (This item has 5 charges. As an Bonus Action, the wielder may spend 1 charge to cast the Light cantrip on the shield, and spend additional charges to increase the radius of bright light by 10' each. This item regains 1d4+1 expended charges at dawn). -- Mundane Magical Item (~100gp) |
| #2cowleymenApr 12, 2015 23:39:55 | your shield glaive makes very litte sense to me, but other then that, every thing else looks great! |
| #3transcendantviewerApr 13, 2015 1:28:52 | Some of these look interesting, but also seem like they're a little more complex than necessary. Trying to get a bit more of a 3.5 feel are we? Regardless your answer, I don't really have any qualms with these items except the shield-glaive; specifically because I can't see how it works. Unless it's a magical item, which it doesn't seem to be, I don't understand how such a thing could function in a combat scenario without snapping to pieces. If anything, I'd say consider rewriting it to "Shield-Glaive. 1d8 Slashing Damage. Heavy, Two Handed, Reach, Special. Special: While wielding this strange Guesarme in one hand, the user can treat it as though it were a shield, but loses the ability to wield it as an effective weapon." I would have it weigh 15lbs. This rewrite gives the wielder the best of both worlds. They get the glaive they always wanted, and without even expending their one free object interaction each round, can still benefit from having a shield when they're done attacking. |
| #4supreme_slayerApr 13, 2015 9:40:37 | Haha. I guess I should have expanded on that, since it's the strangest of them. It's basically the same thing as a Charge Blade from Monster Hunter. There certainly is a lot of "impossible" mechanics involved with it and you do kinda have to suspend your disbelief, but I suppose with the complexity and all it shouldn't be just a normal weapon, but rather on the magical item list. As it would take much more than the average Joe to craft.
The Lantern Shield was just something I made because one of my players hated having to put away either their shield or weapon in a dungeon to pull out a torch/lantern. |

Or make it magical, give it X charges, and you can spend a charge for the Light cantrip.

| #7cowleymenApr 13, 2015 13:13:37 | There is an item called a driftglobe you might want to look into. I just got it from the Princes game, 3rd level. It hovers, glows with the light cantrip, and follows the user from 60 ft. |
| #8transcendantviewerApr 13, 2015 13:51:04 | One of the things I always did back in 3.5 was grab an Everburning Torch and mold a sconse for it onto my fighter's shoulder plates. That way it was always where it needed to be, and because the flames weren't actually fire, he wasn't at risk of being burnt or even blinded by it. |
| #9EckApr 13, 2015 15:25:23 | Yeah, one more vote against the lamp-shield. I don't think you want to block with a flaming, oil-filled container.
The Gythka gives you Two 1d8's for two weapon fighting. It's not something that's going to break your game, but I don't think you could do this before. Plus with it being finesse, a rogue could pick up Polearm Master and get an AoO when they enter his reach. If he happens to have advantage, that's an extra dose of sneak attack damage.

| #10supreme_slayerApr 13, 2015 16:01:19 | Yeah, I dropped the lantern shield as a normal item and just made it a magical item. Two weapon fighting is supposed to be Dual Wielder, which could indeed already get two d8 attacks even with finesse. I wasn't really thinking too much about how the Gythka would affect rogues, since my main concern was with Small creatures having access to two-handers, and how they would be primarily Dex users. The Gythka in the MM is not Finesse. However, thinking about it, as long as Sneak Attack isn't ruled a different way than I think, you could only use Sneak damage on the Sentinel strike if you hadn't already done sneak damage since your turn, and plus, having advantage or an ally within 5 feet in that scenario would be less likely to me.
Not to mention that a rogue can't get access to the Gythka without multiclassing into something with Martial proficiencies, being Thri-Kreen, or taking the weapons feat. Maybe I'm wrong though? |
| #11transcendantviewerApr 13, 2015 15:57:20 | After reading Eck's response, I'm going to have to take his side on this one. You might want to reduce it to 1d4 on each side. It's a reach and finesse weapon. I think that's a bit crazy now that I look at it again. |
| #12supreme_slayerApr 13, 2015 16:05:59 | Oh, and you mentioned that it's reach, but it's actually not. So with Polemaster and Sentinel, it functions fundamentally different than the other mentioned weapons.
EDIT: And I guess I should not let it count for Dual Wielding, since it kinda out performs someone just wielding two weapons. |
| #13transcendantviewerApr 13, 2015 16:02:31 | And blocking with something that's a glorified vial of fire attached to a hunk of metal could go south very quickly; or it could be awesome. Smack someone in the chest with it and cause a spark, you just created a human torch to light your way, though your shield's likely to have a few new burn stains on it. |
