So I'm running a group of 7 players through the Starter set adventure (modified to make it flow into HoDQ without too much continuity errors, and difficulty ramped up for the larger party). LMoP is pretty heavy with Magic items, so at the moment it has been spread pretty good.
I have a Barbarian great weapon build character, who uses a heavy maul. They just defeated Nezznir in the mine, and in the description it mentions a great stone warhammer across the knees of the statue to demathoin. As there are no 2 handed magic weapons in this adventure, I wanted to customize it as a magic 2 handed Maul for the barbarian (he hasn't gotten any treasure yet this adventure). I want it to be a bit more thematic than just a +1 Maul tho. I'm thinking instead of +1 maul, that it be some sort of Magical effect...I had an idea it could be called Earthbreaker or shaker or something, and have some sort of earthquake like ability. Like, on a critical hit it causes a small localized quake that does and extra 1D6 (D8?) bludgeoning damage and causes the oppenent hit to fall prone (save of DC 13 maybe?)...
Any suggestions to make it balanced with the other magic items? I was thinking it could have some small gravel circling a the cracked head of the stone maul, with maybe yellowish gold light shining though the cracks?
Any thoughts?

You can add other little quirks like after carrying the maul for at least 10 minutes (or any number), the user's hands will be covered with earthy dirt, no matter how clean they were before. Unless the user's hands are covered in dirt, whether from this effect or by manually dirtying one's hands, the critical effect of Earthbreaker will not function. In all cases, every item should be awesomely unique and one the player's ooh and ahh over.
