Was just kicking around thoughts about Psionics and spells that touch on parallel abilities. What do you think about Telekinesis being based on your Intelligence score? As if your Int score were your physical strength for purposes of anything you could do with the power. Or what if mage hand had a weight limit equal to your actual Strength score for low-level purposes?
Maybe you could use a "surge-like" ability based on your modifier to multiply the weight capacity for situational enhancements, but then can't use that ability again until you've completed a short or long rest kind of thing.
Example:
Shmendrik the magician uses TK to lift a goblin (which he could easily carry if his 20 Int score were his Str-and the gobby failed his save) and drop it over a ledge or just raise it to a lethal dropping height. OK, that plays out normally as you might guess. But what if he wanted to do that to an ogre? Ogre weight might be in the category of push/pull/drag and thusly, Shmendrik could just push him over the edge after all the appropriate saves and contests (if you will), but actually lifting the beastie off the ground?
Well, how about as a single instance, Shmendrik could supercharge his spell to increase his effective lifting ability x5 (the modifier)? Or, up to 5x, but for each "modifier point" used in this way, Shmendrik's modifier is depleted (and all subsequent effects based on that modifier are depleted) by a the number of modifier points he expended until after a short or long rest.
Just kind of always bugged me that spell or psionic telekinesis had a set weight capacity. I know there were more flexible capacities in previous editions, but I was just looking for something a little more elegant.
Anyway, just thought I'd share a thought. |

As long as he beats their checks, he can lift that ogre up just like he does the goblin. |

Until then, I'll just use the rules which already state that a powerful mind (High spellcasting ability) can lift a weak object (low Strength Save), but struggles against something heavier (and thus, stronger) like an Ogre.
Plays out just fine for now! Heck, maybe DMG might have neat variants |
