Howdy folks,

haven't been around much, other than lurking about, for the last eight months, or so, such is life, I suppose.

Before I get to the thread topic, I'd like to thank all of the contributors for all of the efforts of adding awesome tools, sheets, etc, etc, etc...... These are the best examples of what this community is about. So again, thank you.

As far as the thread topic. I am running a two session halloween quickie. It is going to revolve around the hags, specifically the Night Hag, from the MM. I am planning for a coven of night hags to be terrorizing a town. Looking at the DM Basic Rules, I am seeing that an encounter with said Hags would result in a higher than I had hoped challenge.

The breakdown I am getting is as follows.

  • There will be 6 PCs.
  • Three Hags, each being a CR 7, 2900xp, due to the coven

Hags: 2900 x 3 = 8700

x 1.5 (encounter multiplyer, for 6PCs) = 13050xp

/ 6 PCs = 2175 xp per player

So that looks like a hard 10th level encounter for the group.

Is this accurate?

-edited to reflect 6 PCs properly in the encounter multiplyer.

It's more art than science, but the numbers you've calculated are correct in any case.

If it were my game, I'd put the PCs at 7th level (assuming a one-shot) and set the adventure on a timeline that has the hags able to be encountered separately early on and together as a group later. So if the characters take their sweet time, they risk having to fight the hags all together. But if they're fast and smart, they might be able to take them down one at a time. Then it's just a matter of figuring out obstacles that will challenge the players and present the dilemma of delays.

yes, indeed. As I am plotting it out, lossely, they will have some time to research about the hags  and make tatical decisions. the plot has a bit of backstabbing from within the coven, and even one that is away for a bit of time, reducing the number down for a bit.

Basically, the adventure synopsis is about a Night Hag coven who is terrorizing a small town. In the town is a twelve year old girl, Joley, ( a cousin of one PC), who will be celebrating her 13th birthday in 4 days, and her favorite cousin is there to visit on this special occasion.

What is supposed to be a happy time quickly turns bad, and some events lead the players to believe that a hag is showing herself. A boy named Bran is being haunted at night, and having dreadful visions. the work of a hag. Of course, their is treachery afoot as well. One hag is planning on offing her sister, and bring in her Daughter, Joley, into the coven. On her 13th bday, this is supposed to go down. She will turn into her "mother's" image, kill her parents, and join the coven, after the one hag is removed. The third hag is away crafting her Soul Bag, and will not take part in anything until the end. She will either return to help in the big fight, or come back to a destroyed coven, and go into hiding.

The players will be able to identify the  hags' intentions and actions through research and investigation. There wil be more fleshed out material, but that's the gist of it.

I like your ideas.

Have you ever read a manga called Claymore? In it, demons disguise themselves as humans and hide in the community while they feed. Warriors travel the country finding them and killing them. I've often thought hags could do a similar thing to great effect. Perhaps the coven has replaced key members of the community, and unravelling their intrigues and revealing them as monsters might be a fun challenge.

I digress, sorry.

I'd play in this game if I had the chance, sounds fun.

Thanks..

I have thought about making an full fledged adventure around that idea as well. My inspiration would be from the tv show called Salem. I've always loved witches and thought I would get away from my regular scheduled zombie apocalypse Halloween game.

Thanks for the input.
