Hi there,

i startet to dm my first campain a few weeks ago and my party is around lvl 3 atm, 5 pc + 1npc wich is permently accompany the group.

So i wanted to give my npc a transformlike ability, which should work as a fail-safe for the group in case i make encounters to hard.

There should be two triggers for this ability, one on a specific point of the storyline and one if the npc gets kockedout.
But iam not sure how to do this. Just creat a template for it like for a werewolf?
In generell the npc should be able to transform in a fiend or fiendisch humanoind looking thing.
The ability/spell or whatever it will be should work rather easy and its not a matter of blancing because i wanted to add a high colldown to it.

Iam looking forward for any help i can get.

PS.: sry for bad english, its not my native language.

Hmmm, ok, there are a couple of ways you can do this.

I do not know which edition of D&D you are using, but a pretty simple way is to replace him completely with a new monster (at full health) after being knocked out. Look for a monster ~level 5 (I can't remember level for werewolf off the top of my head). You could also use beasts (owlbear, bear, tiger), jackalwere, or many other ferocious creatures.

Also remember that the players do not have to know what stats your creature has. You could also easily just have him transform, give him a simple claw attack for a level 5-6 character, and ignore the damage the character takes.

I hope that helps

thx for your reply!
our version is 3.5e.

so you would make it just invulnerable?
at least this would guarantee that it works to save the party.

about the weapon/attack, iam thinking about to just let her use her greatsword in a buffed version or something.
