Can the Vicious Mockery spell work on skeletons? It says and creature that is in range to hear you but does not need to understand you. The description of skeletons says, "they are not mindless". Still, psycic damage seems like you would need a mind to be affected. Has there been an official rule clarifying this or should I just make a call?

Thanks!

Well Ann Coulter seems vulnerable to mockery. It's possible it just makes them stronger, though.

And yes, it's your call, nothing says skeletons are immune to psychic damage.

It can affect skeletons. It's just how to find an explaination how.

5th edition had a nice theory on this. A sentient creature was said to have a body, a soul and what was called the "animus", instincts and primal feelings. Every undead creature still has some of these parts, but usually not all. All insubstantial undead lacked the body. All the mindless undead lacked the soul.

A skeleton has body and animus in thie theory, it's the corpse brought to life by the instincts and primal feelings, it doesn't have the reason or the memories of the soul.

Psychic damage could be said to affect the animus, because it is part of the mind, although what is concidered the more bestial part.

And if Vicious Mockery affecting creatures totally unable to grasp an insult is a problem (or an insult killing someone), I like to think the spell doesn't so much uses an insult to hurt the target, but it converts a wellmeant insult by the caster into a damaging energy that's thrown at the target.

"Magic" (damn I really have to find a clip from Night at the Museum for that).

It's what seperates Vicious Mockery from... vicious mockery.
