Warlock/Wizard multi-class question

I have a player who is 7 level Warlock and was interested in possibly taking a level in Wizard.  The reason he was interested was to gain extra spell slots.  We both read over the section about multi-class and their different spell uses, and we still can't figure it out.  How would that work?  At 7th level, he has 2 spell slots at 4th level of Warlock, and a level 1 Wizard would have 2 slots of 1st level, but the chart that's in the PHB talks about adding the levels and some weird formula.

It doesn't seem right to me that if he took 1 level of Wizard, he'd have 2 4th from Warlock and then get 4 ist, 3 2nd, 3 3rd, and 2 4th in Wizard (8th level wizards total allotment).  Can someone explain this to me?  Thanks!

He would have two fourth level slots from pact magic, and two slots of 1st level from spellcasting. The weird formula only kicks in When you have two spellcasting classes (I.e. wizard/bard); pact magic is unrelated. You can use your warlock slots to cast your 1st level wizard spells, as if they were 4th level spells, and they'll still regenerate on a short rest.

The character essentially has one pool of spells to choose from but two different mechanisms for casting them.

(Which need to be kept track of separately, since  some of his spell slots will be available more than once per day and some won't...)
