| #1dang13Apr 17, 2015 19:45:41 | (not sure if this is the right thread for this) Hey, so I'm new to Dnd as of this year, but I'm really interested in DMing. I was going through the DM guide and got an idea for a wild west take on dnd. Now, the first thing most people think about the wild west is cowboys, followed closely by their six-shooter revolvers. I did some research, and found I really didn't like how 5e handles firearms. The way they have them set up is to be ridiculously rare and powerful. I liked the 3.5 system for firearms much better, but it doesn't really match up very well with 5e. So, I came up with a fairly simple chart, using existing 5e weapons as a base and added something called Load Class (LC). A weapon's LC equals the amount of ammo it can hold (Load) +10. To reload a weapon, you roll d20 and add your Dex modifier to see if you match/exceed the weapon's LC. If you do, it only takes a move action to fully reload your weapon. On a fail, it takes a round (move action + attack action) to reload. I'm also planning a feat to allow you to add your proficiency bonus to your roll.
Derringer: based on Dart
Pepper Box: based on Sling
Revolver: based on hand Crossbow
Carbine: based on Shortbow Rifle: based on Longbow
So yea, I just sort of swapped out names and added the LC thing, but I think it would work pretty well. What do you guys think? |

Then, I'd make up a ruling for "scatter guns" and have the pepper box be the low-damage shorter range simple weapon, and the shotgun be the higher damage better range martial equivalent.
That's what seems simplest, at least (I'd actually go a different route, probably just slightly tweaking the stats found in Deadlands d20 or Call of Cthulhu d20).
Edit to add: I'd also use the recent Behind the Screens article in determining how wild west armor options worked, and making all the firearms deal ballistic damage instead of normal piercing. |
