He wants to slowly gain the memories and powers of the homebrewed version, who was seriously OP due to the DM style of the original campaign. He also wants to find the sword the original character wielded...now this sword did the equivalant of a Ancient Wyrms breath weapon when slammed into the ground. I know the 2E character well as it was mine and the player wants to be the next version of him. It somewhat fits into the current campaign as the original was tainted at the end of his run and became a scion of the dark gods, the new PC has what we equate to PTSD and sees flashes of old battles. He is currently trying to destory the taint in a magical gem.

As for the sword, make the quest for some MacGuffin lead to the sword tagentially, but not until mid to mid-late levels; don't give it to the character before level 9. The power should probably be useable once a day, recovering at dawn like many other weapon powers. I would suggest it could be useable with high-level spell slots, but EKs are 1/3 spellcasters. |

Just work out what combination of existing classes and feats would best represent the scion, and let the player take them when eligible, to represent the memories and power coming through.
You can let the player search for and follow up leads to the weapon as they quest, until they are at the level where it would be appropriate for an item of the power that you decide it is. You can always have it grow in power later. |

You could allow it to fall into a PC's hands, but their only real use of the weapon would be to find a way to destroy it. The weapon would be able to use the PCs easier than they can use it. Maybe the weapon intends to use this descendant to slay its former owner. Maybe it resents being discarded.
If you want them to be able to cleanse it, I'd likely strip it of most of its power in the process since its power derives from the evil that inhabits it. And prior to being cleansed, most powers likely aren't accessible by the PC since they are at odds with the weapon. |

I had been thinking that the Scion was attempting to gain access to the world through this PC, and when the Scion took over the PC would be able to use a higher level spell, but the exertion would cause the Scion to lose control until he finds the sword. At that point it would be come a battle of wills-aided by the Gods to determine who would reign. Any thoughts? |

Give the character a wall that they cant seem to pass, that way, the PC will have to forge their own path with their character based on whats happening in the game, rather than what they personally want the character to do. If the character were to just assume the role of the past character, you might as well just let them be that character and get rid of the whole descendant thing.
As for the sword, I think if they are looking for a specific Ancient Sword they should find it destroyed in a cave, shattered from the cave partially collapsing from the ages passed, let them gather the pieces to bring to some other forge to reforge it. Again, if they are just to go around and collect the same things the past character had, its just Diablo. I personally like more story.

The player could role-play the deluded character but it wouldn't unbalance the game. Likewise, he could find the sword and imagine that it has its old properties but actually it is just a plain +1 sword when it comes to rolling attacks. He rolls an 11 on the d20, claims +10 but mysteriously misses an AC14 monster. |
