Do you determine a group of NPCs as individual CR or just one (in which case how do you determine CR for purposes of XP) Example: The group fights and is victorious against an evil group consisting of a level 1 barbarian, level 2 rogue, level 3 fighter, level 4 wizard and a level 5 cleric...individually their xp would be 200+450+700+1100+1800=4250. Where as if it had been a group of all level 5s it would be 1800x2 group multiplier=3600.
Or do you as DM determine randomly what you think the fight was worth (if this is the case what method are you using to calculate it).
I looked for this in the books and could not find a clear explination. I may have missed it, so if I have please point it out to me.

| #4iserithApr 23, 2015 10:06:46 | DMG page 92:
Challenge Rating. An NPC built for combat needs a challenge rating. Use the rules in chapter 9 [page 273] to determine the NPC's challenge rating, just as you would for a monster you designed. |
