hallo,

one of my players wants to play this character. How would you combine the "lawful-goodness" of the Paladin with the "nefarious plans" of the Cabinet of Faces?

Is this his background or does he intend to level in these classes throughout the campaign?

If the first, I could see him having started out as a rogue/Cabinet Trickster, before being converted to a different religion. The Cabinet of Faces will take this ill, but it it gives you, as a DM, a few interesting adventure hooks. If the Cabinet does not yet know of his defection, it could also be interesting, as a kind of double agent for a lawful organisation investigating the Cabinet. The other way around would probably cause him to fall.

However, he might also consider the Traveler a beneficient deity - assuming that is his patron, considering the Cabinet of Faces follows that entity. This is Eberron, after all, and the Traveler is unlikely to appear and put him right. He might consider the deity as a teacher - showing people how to resist temptation of all kinds; the paladin might believe that the Traveler does not want people to accept his "Gifts of the Traveler", but rather wishes them to finally learn to stop expecting to get something for nothing, that true rewards are not gifts but need to be earned, and that it pays to be always ony our guard - lest someone far worse than the Traveler takes advantage of you. These lessons would actually be "good", if they teach rather than harm, and "lawful", since they teach you to be wary of chaos. It will take a lot to convince yourself to believe this, but changelings may be as good at deceiving themselves as they are at deceiving others.

Finally, consider a variant paladin. Unearthed Arcana has a Paladin of Freedom (CG) anda  Paladin of Slaughter (CE). Both eliminate the Lawful component, though the Traveler is still neither evidently "good" nor yet a mass-murdering psychopath. One of the Dragon Magazines, #310 I believe, had paladins of different alignments, including CN, which might serve your purpose. That is, assuming that he wants paladin-like abilities and a holy-warrior flavour, not necessarily Knight-in-Shining-Armor-LG-Flavor.
