My team of players is on their way to retrieve an artifact for House Cannith somewhere in the middle of Xen'Drik. They have a method for tracking this artifact which is basically a compass pointing out the exact direction. On their journey they have an NPC ranger guide with them who can provide some help on the way.

The team currently consist of:
Lv 5 Human Wizard (conjurer) (evocation and illusion as forbidden schools)
Lv 5 Elf Sorceress
Lv 5 Human Fighter
Lv 5 Dwarf Cleric (of Onatar)
Lv 5 Changeling Rogue
Lv 3 Drow Ranger (NPC)

Right now I'm basically looking for ideas for things that could happen during the journey. So far they're travelling with a small sailing vessel up the enormous river that penetrates to the heart of the continent. They have fought some random encounters (displacer beasts, a giant snake and some sahuagin (while making camp near the water) but random encounters are just encounters... The wizard is craving for some DUNGEONS.

One of the ideas for an encounter I'm playing with is a large green dragon who is resting near the river. The dragon, being in a playful mood, decides to mess with the adventurers and sends them on two small missions. One is to search an old abandoned drow settlement for an artifact it knows rests within its depths, and one is to pick a flower for it. Of course this isn't just any flower, but the players doesn't know that. It's an udoroot (CR 5 monster from Exp. Psi. Handbook). Naturally it doesn't tell them the plant is quite dangerous... And tt will only let them pass if they accomplish those tasks.

One I used recently, adapted from a location in Secrets of Xen'drik.

Have a violent, unnatural storm (The sorcere and wizard can identify it with a Knowledge (arcana) check as being unnatural) suddenly appear overhead. The PCs evetually have to run aground, and the river itself starts flooding. They have to head inland, to try and find shelter before the river valley floods completely and they drown.

Through the jungles they flee, their drow guide leading them to higher ground, when they find a massive, miles-high tower piercing the clouds above them. The tower is of Giant make, and Colossal+ giants at that. This tower is actually an ancient skyscraper built to giant proportions. It would be a cool dungeon crawl to go through, where the PCs are toy-sized compared to their environs. Enemies can range from automomous servants repelling the PCs as invaders, some plant monsters from an overgrown atrium level, avain monsters roosting on floor with broken windows that allowed them access. But all the colossal giants are gone, extinct.

Eventually, have the PCs ascend to a level high enough that they're above the unnatural storm, where they can wait it out saftely.

(In my game, I had a storm-elemental/roc creature break the window on a floor 10 miles up, sucking the PCs out of the tower, where they had a free-fall encounter with the thing. They survived because I included some magic item gems as the creature's eyes, which were the only things left when they killed it, and allowed them all to Feather Fall to the ground.)

That's a very cool idea. They've been craving some dungeon crawling for a while. I'll get to drawing it immediately :D
