(Yeah, I'm still with 3.5, but there is no 3.5 Eberron board, so this one is the closest that I can post this template.)

Greetings,

while the whole idea of having a dragonmark is nice, it takes a lot of work in order to get the proper feats. So, I've decided to create a template for those who wish to play dragonmarked characters without the hefty ammount of feats required to do so.

Dragonmarked

The dragonmarks are the prime symbols of the Draconic Prophecy. They manifest randomly, and each holds a powerful gift bestowed on those who bear one. Dragonmarks are usually harnessed and their powers grow as the bearer ages and become stronger, but sometimes, an unexpected person might end up with a Siberys dragonmark, the final and most powerful dragonmark state, without warning. However, some bearers are born directly with the dragonmark and to many observers’ surprise, the mark actually evolves by itself. True, the dragonmark gets stronger as its bearer does so, but the bearer might not train nor even notice that its mark evolves on its own record.

Creating a Dragonmarked creature

Dragonmarked is an inherited template that can be applied to any creature capable of having a true dragonmark, referred to hereafter as the base creature.

Special Qualities: The base creature gains a dragonmark, keyed to its race and origin, as presented by the feats below. At 18 HD, the base creature gains a Siberys dragonmark, as the Heir of Siberys prestige class feature. Furthermore, if the base creature has taken levels in the Dragonmark Heir prestige class when it reached 18 HD, it can still pursue this path without penalty. However, due the feat prohibitions (see below), the base creature cannot take any level in the Heir of Siberys prestige class.

Feats: The base creature gains the following feats according to its total HD (racial and class HD combined):
At 1 HD, the base creature receives Least Dragonmark as a bonus feat.
At 3 HD, the base creature receives Dragonmark Prodigy as a bonus feat.
At 6 HD, the base creature receives Lesser Dragonmark as a bonus feat.
At 9 HD, the base creature receives Dragonmark Adept as a bonus feat.
At 12 HD, the base creature receives Greater Dragonmark as a bonus feat.
At 15 HD, the base creature receives Dragonmark Visionary as a bonus feat.

Challenge Rating: as base creature +1

Level adjustment: Same as the base creature +2

So what do you think ?

It's a very interesting idea. I wouldn't use it as I simply allow more feats in my campaigns at 1st and every even level for precisely the reason of allowing more customization.

I wouldn't grant the Siberys dragonmark. It ruins the uniqueness of the mark as a spontaneous and powerful manifestation.

I would also add that if the template is applied twice from mixing of dragonmark bloodlines, all dragonmarks are aberrant dragonmarks. You'd need to work out the extras, though.

As an alternative, you could set up the template to grant only the least, lesser, and greater marks at a lower LA, which would make it more enticing and less restrictive in regards to which dragonmark feats your character has.

Excellent idea, one I'll be thinking about further tonight. That level adjustment, though? Not so nice, especially at the lowest levels where the only benefit is an extra feat.

Heh, something just occured to me - how about going a little off the beaten path and build this like a monstrous bloodline from Unearthed Arcana?

Hell, one could take this further and make shifter bloodlines (for each type of shifter) and warforged bloodlines (for the different body types)...!
