Greetings, all. When I was laying in bed this morning, ruminating over things, I had some thoughts.

Sharn is a big city, and can be confusing, with all of the bloody levels and whatnot.

There are maps of the various levels of Sharn in Sharn: City of Towers.

So, why not print out those maps on sheets of Cardstock, put some supports in, and have a 3-d map of Sharn that a.) You can put markers on, including PC minis, and b.) that you can break down?

Anybody familiar with the properties of cardstock? How thick? What kind of supports should be used?

No clue....but with that type of thinking, maybe your should never get out of bed!  Sounds awesome.

I'd recomend getting foam-core board as it will be sturdier. You could use empty dice tubes to support they layers. Your LGS may have dice tubes or clear boxes lying around they don't use or will let you use if you host it there. Bonus, possible dice storage.

I kinda want to do this now...

I am very familiar with cardstock terrain and use WorldWorks Games stuff all the time. Do you want to map out encounters in a 3D environment (if so check out the various products at that link in the fantasy section) or a city map that is interative? If it is the latter, I would also ask how you would like to store it (does it need to come apart and how much so?). Finally, how big are you planning on making this?

On a side note, this idea is ingenious! I am totally stealing it.

By all means, do it up. Just be sure to tell us how you did it, and how it worked. I was envisioning just printing out the maps and stacking them on top of each other separated by supports, so that there would be a visual representation of where the PCs are in Sharn.

Personally, I would print them on full sheet label paper and adhere it to black foamcore. I haven't decided what to do for the supports yet. Also up in the air is size to print at (I hope everything is at the right scale already, too) and spacing between levels.

A quick list of prints:

  • Upper Wards

  • Middle Wards

  • Lower Wards

  • Skyway

  • Upper Cogs

  • UnderSharn

This is everything I see at quick glance, but doesn't seem like it would be all of the levels. Here are the maps. If a mini is to be used then the levels would need to be 2-3" apart, which puts this at 10-15" tall and probably about the size of a sheet of paper.

Thoughts?

Sounds about right.

I think I did try to print them out, but the resolution wasn't good enough for full-page....can't remember, though.

I can't find decent images for the Upper Cogs, or the Skyway. They look like they will limit the size of this map. About 4"x5" and 5"x5" for those two images doesn't look too bad, but to shrink the others that small seems like it would limit usefulness. Thoughts?

No idea. I never was big into graphic stuff, so no idea how to manipulate it to good effect.

However, keep in mind that Skyway is smaller than all the other levels; only two districts. I thought I remember the Skyway map being the same size as the other maps.....?

if I ever get the chance, I want to try this in full-model form. I'm thinking plastic, though I might be able to make it out of some kind of metal if I can get started on Blacksmithing (I'm such a dork).

if I went that route, I'd be smelting scrap-alloy (that is, I'd basically smelt whatever kind of metal I can find and cast that in molds). I've been talking with an SCA Blacksmith for a couple years now, and he suggested Casting Sand with just a drop or two of Canola Oil for Molds, and starting with Bronze for jewelry and such (becuse of how well and inexpensive the Tin, Copper and Zinc work). since this needs alot less firmness, I'd probably suggest a cheaper, lighter metal. it would need to be soft enough to mold easily, and doesn't need to be too sturdy.

thank you SO much, guys! :D I'm glad to have found this. Ogiwan, you have some serious creativity.

So, an actual model of Sharn? That....could be interesting. I mean, it would be hella cool, but there are all sorts of interpritations of what Sharn looks like.

Hmm. I had initially envisaged this model to make it easier for a party in Sharn to keep track of where everybody was. It would be "3d" only in that the levels of Sharn would be stacked above each other; the actual levels would be a simple map.

honestly, I don't think I'll ever realy get around to it. it would take a butt-load of work, both in mapping the dang thing ins the first place, and then in modelling it.
