I have come up with a concept for my campaign that borrows heavily from some other people's ideas and adds a little something.

Currently my group is going through the Eberron converted Keep on the Shadowfell. Once this is completed, I will have a small band of adventurer types come to get the Sinister Third rib from them. These adventurers will be a part of an airship’s crew that goes around doing one mission at a time as a behind the scenes way of keeping the Five Nations at peace.

I am thinking that these missions should not be tied to a single house, but rather a checks and balances for the houses. Having watched the movie “Wanted” recently, I am thinking that something similar to the loom might be the way that the missions are given out (other ideas welcomed as well).

One major mission that I am thinking that I will lead up to is the cause of the Mourning. I am thinking that King Boranel is the cause. He brought peace by use of the shock of killing off an entire nation. In his eyes this was less casualties than it would have been if the war had continued.

The PCs might be sent to protect him and find out the situation. I am going to have an opposing group (a group with similar missions to the PC's) try and off the King in some way. The kicker will be that the opposing group will be past campaign PCs (the ones that were used in my 3.5 Xen’drik campaign).

Long story short, I feel that this is a decent way to let my player explore different parts of the continent and gain a feel of Eberron, as well as stay interesting, diversified and eventful.

Some things that I am struggling with are:
How to tie this in with the Mark of Shadow the party Elven Rogue will have shortly
How to handle the airship (most aspects)
How to connect events to the mentioned King Boranel hook
What group/methods to use for the source of missions
What are they key things that should be introduced to a group that is fairly new to Eberron
What not to include
Anything else that comes to mind when you are reading this
Any suggestions on any aspect would be wonderful.

Beside the Elven Rogue with the Mark of Shadow, who are the other characters?

Around what level you plan on revealing the cause of the Mourning?

With these two question answered I think I would be in a better posture to answer yours.

The cause of the Mourning is something that I am not sure when to reveal it to my players. It could be revealed soon or the backdrop of the entire campaign...what do you think?

As for classes/races in my group, there are 4 PCs:
Eladrin Ranger (TWF)
Eladrin Wizard (Wand)
Dragonborn Warlord
Elf Rogue

The cause of the "Mourning" is something i personally wouldn't ever reveal. Its something that should remain hidden, sinister and decidely unnerving for the players - after all who knows if it might happen again because of their actions.

What about the main idea of my campaign? The mission style adventure about to be embarked upon. I am unsure of what organization to have this be a part of and would love suggestions for individual missions (especially the first one). They are currently 2-4 sessions from completing KotS, depending on session productivity.

You know, this really reminds me of something... I'm afraid to mention it, though, because it would be a huge spoiler in case you don't know it. A similar idea has been discussed here before, though Merrix was the mastermind behind everything:

Maybe it will give you some sort of inspiration. I like the idea of Boranel as the causer more, though... but the setting would become REALLY dark if that was the case.

I appreciate the linked thread and love the concept. It will be hard to incorporate a dragonmark into the warforged thing, although I guess it could be abberant unbeknownst to the PC. Maybe I could relate the initial plot devices to my original idea and have King Boranel be the one who hired them.

I think this idea sounds like it would be best suited if it was founded and master minded by a rogue dragon. Perhaps even a band of dragons that are working together to keep things on par for the course.

I have a dragon run brohterhood in my campaigns known as the Brotherhood of the Hidden Word. It is a brotherhood( though there could be women in it too) that believe that there are powerful words that can be used to create or uncreate things. they are there to make sure that no one ever discovers this power. Except them. I came up with it for a gnome dragonshaman charcter in one of my games, but i have made it cannon for all my Eberron games.

Something like that might fit well for your campaign idea.

Once your party is aboard the airship they can go pretty much everywhere. I am thinking they are not the owners of the ship and that it is crewed and captained by someone other than themselves.

So, first mission would be a payment mission for the captain to be aboard the airship. It can be anything, find an artifact for the captain's collection and make it related to the PCs more than it first seem. Or the captain needs to erase some tracks he left behind, and confront an enemy. The PCs could save his life, and to thank them could give them the airship or put the whole crew under their command for their own missions.

These were only two example but it could be anything. The idea is to put the PCs in control of the airship, meaning they decide where it goes. In the Keep on the Shadowfell, or their first adventures on the ship, they could have learned legends, secrets, or clues that could lead them to the cause behind the Mourning.

The organizations that are definitly interesting, at the beginning of the campaign if you want it to link it with Boranel, are the King's Guard, the Dark Lantern and such intellingence organization working for Breland's King. The goal of such organisation would be to 1. know what the PCs are up to 2. make the PCs in good relation with Boranel so when they discover he is responsible for Cyre's lost they understand why he did it and don't want to kill him on sight.

I personnaly think a campaign or a few adventures around the Mourning is great if handle properly.

As for the Mark of Shadow, you, as a DM know that all high members of the Phiarlan House were out of Cyre on the Day of the Mourning. Maybe they worked with Boranel to destroy Cyre.

Your PCs could then either get some help from House Phiarlan to uncover the truth or House Phiarlan could give them a hard time by not being cooperative, and thus get help from Thuranni. Even if your PC is a Phiarlan, the House can be an enemy and Thuranni can be a friend.

That's all I can come up with for now. Keep us updated.
