| #2AmarilNov 17, 2008 15:43:15 | But all roads lead to Sharn, and Sharn is the gateway to Xen'drik. It's the perfect place to aggregate disparate adventurers and the most universal location to send an already existing team. As a publisher, I would use Sharn first, and maybe Stormreach second, but Stormreach is too detached from Khorvaire, which is the primary continent for Eberron adventures. |
| #3Arcane_GuyverNov 17, 2008 17:45:18 | Sharn seems like the most logical starting location for an introductory adventure in that it's certainly the most convenient. However, I can't shake the feeling that Sharn is much more impressive if the PCs start in a more mundane location and enter Sharn at a later date. I've found that starting the game in one of the setting's most dynamic and fantastic locations makes the rest of world somehow look more mundane than they should be. I personally like the idea of starting in Fairhaven. It's a bit more towards the center of the continent (so adventures could lead in any direction) - you got druids to the west, pirates to the north, paladins to the south, necromancers to the east, the LoBster and his wasteland to the southeast, areas of monsters to the northwest and southwest, and the "frontier" of Breland to the south. And in Aundair itself, you got a good-intentioned yet dangerously ambitious ruler, some of the most fanatical of the Flamites, the ill-fated Mosaic Committe, and a very competitive university. And finally, it is one of the nations hit the hardest by the Last War, trading large amounts of land for some bitter resentment. |
| #4kawnellNov 17, 2008 18:04:21 | I started my last campaign "on the job" in the Seawall Mountains. 2 years later, they've seen most of Khorvaire, but never went to Sharn. Go figure. Have Fun |
| #5skrapsanNov 18, 2008 0:12:23 | Well given that there is going to be an adventure path, just like they did with the 3.5 version of this setting, and the DMG 4th ed, and FR 4th ed. I feel inclined to say that I have no problem with the players visiting Sharn later on. But I as many feel that Sharn is a bit overwhelming as a first time Eberron DM, at least with the info that was given me at the time. Had I read trough Sharn: CioT first it would have been a whole different adventure. And it actually was, I played it with two different groups. And I understand why they did it. Because lets face it, Sharn is if not the crown jewel of the Eberron setting a pretty gorram important piece (cookie for knowing where gorram is from). But in the end, I would have preferred it if we get to start out on a location that is highly Eberron specific, but not so shall we say, intimidating for first time DMs. And then later down the adventure path we could get a trip to Sharn with intrigue and backstabbing in the rain. That would be totally awesome. Well that was my humble opinion, now its back to waiting for summer and days upon days of roleplaying goodness. |
| #6arjomanesNov 18, 2008 13:12:23 | I too would like to see more adventures written that aren't set in Sharn. We have more than enough information about Sharn. I agree that starting the campaign in a more mundane, expected place and then slowly unveiling all the majesty of Eberron is a great way to run a campaign. I'm starting my campaign on the border of Aundair and Eldeen Reaches, in Windhire/Redleaf. The first adventure was a Blood of Vol plot to open a crypt to discover dark necromantic secrets beneath a ruined fort near Redleaf(using a combo of the Evil Unearthed and Mad God's Key Dungeon adventures). Now I'm going to expand it to an adventure arc with the Emerald Claw, Eldeen Wolves/Ashbound, Knights Arcane, and Royal Eyes of Aundair that will take them into the Eldeen Reaches, Aundair and Thrane, and eventually Karrnath. |
| #7nerdicusNov 19, 2008 19:32:02 | Where ever the adventure starts, you know it will be very Eberron in flavor. Sharn makes sense for all the reasons given thus far, but any place that is distinctly Eberron in flavor should work as well. I could see it starting in an old battle field, or simple battle torn village, with a sotry and plot that can be placed where ever the DM wants. This could be a small village in Aundair or Breland, Thrane or Karnaath. Or where ever! But Wherever it is, it has to be cool. :D Personally I both like the idea of it being in SHarn and not in Sharn. I kind of like the idea of keeping Sharn for higher levels, wait until the players are almost paragon before they have the means and reasons to go to Sharn. And by then they will have the clout to go with teh adventure they are sure to get in. |
| #8balardNov 21, 2008 12:51:50 | As I'm in love with the Eldeen Reaches and they provide a very interesting unique background, I'd love to see the starting adventure take place there... C'mon dude! You stole my campaign! You just forgot to mention the epic plot to raise a rajah! Give it back to me! In a serious note, the Western Khorvaire is great. I'm still thinking in how I will send then to Sharn, it's so full of stuff to do in the "redneck" parts of Khorvaire... |
| #9Arcane_GuyverNov 21, 2008 19:21:16 | Might be interesting ;) Heh, especially if the rajah's dreams somehow animates some of the towers... ![]() |
| #10herogoethNov 25, 2008 17:30:37 | My bid would be to start the introductory adventure aboard a lightning rail on the way to Sharn. Battle aboard the lightning rail, and plenty of room for intrigue, especially when the lightning rail is sabotaged and breaks down. Then once it is repaired, the climactic ending can take place in the City of Towers. |
| #11skrapsanNov 26, 2008 0:10:28 | Well if its an adventure path I see it as mandatory to visit Sharn at least once, and the Mournland, and then from there on its quite the same to me as long as its cool. |
| #12miricNov 26, 2008 6:00:46 | I was thinking about centering mine in Karrnath, having the PCs explore the Mournlands on behalf of Kaius in efforts to win the support of New Cyre away from Breland. Along the way they find evidence linking Breland to the Day of Mourning. Kaius sees this advantage and lets it become public knowledge thru the Korranberg Chronicle and inflames New Cyre to break away from Breland. This then would lead to The Swords of Liberty, manipulated by a high ranking officer (also Cyrean), initiating an attack against King Boranel by hijacking a Lyrandar airship and ramming it a building during a Royal Court function. Still a work in progress. |
