| #1supremeknighttemplarSep 12, 2008 13:18:16 | Is it possible? |
| #2herogoethSep 12, 2008 15:19:11 | It wouldn't be the classic aberrant mark that comes from the interbreeding of two dragonmarked house heirs, but yes. If dragonmarks (empowered signs of the draconic prophecy) can appear in oceanic reefs, cave walls, and magma flows, then why could they not also appear on a bugbear? Again, yes, it is possible, but the appearance of such a mark would be strangely confusing and vastly rare. |
| #3dauthi_overseerSep 12, 2008 15:33:29 | And if the Chamber or any other organization aware of the true meaning of such a manifestation found out... thats one dead bugbear. :P |
| #4dauthi_overseerSep 12, 2008 17:46:30 | Why would the chamber be mad? They don't go around blasting every mountain or coral reef that unfolds with a dragonmark, why would they try to kill the bugbear? It could potentially damage the prophecy, so I'd assume doing anything to the bugbear would be taboo for any dragon. Well first off, the Chamber does not like changes in the Prophecy. There would probably be as many dragons that would want to kill him as there would be that would want to study him. On top of that, if the mark was one of the Dragonmarked Houses marks (I know, he said abberant but still) they would have him put to death for sure. But yeah, eaten or dissected are two likely outcomes if he runs into an agent of the Chamber. Likely, not definitely. :P |
| #5ninjaarthiddenjutsu_dupSep 12, 2008 18:14:00 | In my campaign the Bugbears were the result of Hobgoblins mixing the breeding pool of Ogres, Goblins, and Orcs. So it's entirely possible for them to have an aberrant mark of finding, because orcs can get the real one. |

"Because it showed up on Meat" the Mountain, the Coral Reef, the Forest, the Sky... those are all part of the dragon between. They are apart of the Prophecies as much as anything else but "Meat" that is just defiling the words of the progenitor dragons. Dragons are the Scions of the Dragon Above, they view (as a majority) the life below them as either servants or "Meat". [side note: if you really want to know why i say meat like "Meat" then read the Draconic Prophecies Novel Line, its kind of funny reasoning behind it. I wont spoil anything here] |
| #7mystrichSep 12, 2008 20:41:17 | In 3.5, no? As of 4e, special people touched by the prophesy will be able to manifest any mark. |
| #8NivedSep 12, 2008 20:51:25 | 3.5 its technically possible. How you ask? Well you'd have to check the s block. But there's a reason its in the SBlock, its a spoiler... for an adventure.... I warned you Eyes of the Lich Queen's plot hinges on an eldritch device built in the Age of Demons that sought to pervert the prophecy... it has an interesting effect on humanoids, particularly the PCs who discover it. It marks them. If they're of a Dragonborn race they were allowed to choose a mark they were eligible for or an aberrant. If they were not of a Dragonmarked race they were aberrant. That included Warforged... and if the party included a bugbear... he would have gotten one. So not impossible, but something that is decidedly a PLOT ONLY DM choice. That being said the Chamber did not try to kill them automatically. Oh some in the Chamber might... but aberrants are hardly kill on sight for the Chamber. One of the NPCs in the adventure was the Chamber's foremost expert on Aberrant Marks and was a pretty decent guy, for a dragon. Thats not to say that there were dragons that tried to kill you in that adventure... Of course there are Dragons, like the one mentioned in City of Stormreach that wanted to completely destroy all the humanoid races when dragonmarks started to show up on their flesh. All humanoids, everywhere, just to be sure. So mileage may vary. Also before anyone thinks there is an aberrant factory waiting to be found... it took years to recharge and had the nasty side effect of slowly killing those it marked within a year if they didn't follow the plot back to Argonessen. |
| #9dauthi_overseerSep 12, 2008 21:10:39 | Meh, rules are meant to be broken. There is no reason a bugbear character can't have whatever mark as long as the DM is alright with it. Power to the DM! |
| #10HellcowSep 12, 2008 23:05:04 | Meh, rules are meant to be broken. There is no reason a bugbear character can't have whatever mark as long as the DM is alright with it. Essentially the point. By the 3.5 RULES, no, it is not possible. However, the DM can always change the rules - as EOTLQ or, for that matter, The Delirium Stone show. 4E simply highlights this, making it possible for PCs to be exceptions to the rules that bind others. |
| #11davethebrave371Sep 13, 2008 22:52:12 | as EOTLQ or, for that matter, The Delirium Stone show. A little off-topic, and since it's probably RPGA-centric, something you might not know, but do you know if, since 3.5 is dead, they're planning on releasing the database of 3.5 RPGA adventures? I've always wanted to run the pre-Xen'drik Expeditions stuff, and I don't mind converting it to 4e on my own. I just don't know if they're releasing the PDFs for general download or not. |

While other editions usually go with the newest update, theres A LOT of people who don't like 4e in the least, and refuse to play it. |
| #14HellcowSep 15, 2008 19:14:02 | 3.5 is far from dead. I took the comment to refer directly to the RPGA's 3.5 support of Eberron - which is to say, since the RPGA is not going to have an ongoing 3.5 Eberron campaign, will they make the pre-existing 3.5 Eberron material created for the RPGA available for use by those who either want to stick with 3.5 or convert it to 4E. However, I don't know the answer. |
