But on page 233 of the ECG it says that the Bloody Shadows are part of House Thuranni, and they are hunting members of house Phiarlan. This confuses me. I would think that the bloody shadows would want to kill off house Thurrani for what they did, no? What am I missing? |

The Bloody Shadows are neither part of House Thuranni, nor House Phiarlan. They are the surviving members of the Paelion family that want revenge against House Thuranni, and are also pretty bitter against Phiarlan. The entry says they would go out of their way to torment members of House Phiarlan, but actually that should be written 'Thuranni'. They are mad at Phiarlan too, but are specifically out to get the Thuranni for massacring most of their family. They are definitely not part of either house. (Baker himself explained at on point on these boards that Phiarlan and Thuranni have a strict truce and would almost never officially sanction assasination of one anothers agents, though milder forms of interference are acceptable.) One reason the Bloody Shadows may be listed under House Thuranni is that the Paelion family was most skilled as assassins rather than spys, just like the Thuranni. |

What the piece actually says is "There is a third player, and it doesn't follow the rules." The Bloody Shadows aren't part of House Phiarlan or House Thuranni, and they despise both Phiarlan and Thuranni. I agree that the bit on page 233 says "Phiarlan" when it should say "Thuranni", but they don't like the Phiarlans either, due to the suspicion that the Paelion massacre was actually a joint scheme of Elar and Elvinor. Fun fact: when I originally wrote this section, I said "an elf PC", since it could be from either house; it was changed to "a Phiarlan PC" in editing, creating the confusion. One reason the Bloody Shadows may be listed under House Thuranni is that the Paelion family was most skilled as assassins rather than spys, just like the Thuranni. Correct - and because their feud is aimed more at Thuranni than Phiarlan, so their existence should be more of a concern to plots involving Thuranni than Phiarlan. |
