Last week I started a game in Eberron where the players are adventurers hired by a secret organization created by four drangonmarked houses (they remain anonymous). The organization intentions are clear; they want to create a Tourism Paradise in the lands that are now called the Demon Wastes. The organization is called Orlythugha.

With this goal in mind, they convinced the Church of The Silver Flame to create a settlement at the far south of the Demon Wastes. The Church, with the hopes of cleanse once for all these lands send a paladin called Lord Bummer and a group of 300 civilians, members of the church, to create the settlement. The Organization provided them the needed resources to create a village and promise they will send constant ships of resources and man power.

Meanwhile in Breland, 7 adventurers responded an advertisement and visited the organization’s headquarters in Sharn. A Halfling, member of the organization, received them and lured them with promises of fame, glory, and a lot of money. Novice and eager to face dangers, they signed a contract, and immediately 5 human soldiers and 5 half-elves soldiers escorted them to a ship. After a long trip they finally arrived to Flamehope, a village protected by a 30 feet stone wall full of religious citizens. Here, our adventurers were not prepared for the adventure that awaits them.

================================================

I will post later on the adventure they had in the first day of the campaign. But meanwhile I need your help to create this village. One of the players’ missions is to help the town prosper. I want to be prepared for them to give to their imagination a realistic look of a village, and their decisions will affect the citizens’ mood, economy and prosperity.

I’m creating a list of buildings they will find while they are in the city. Here is where I need your help. Which buildings do you think are needed in a village? Which stores they should find? How do you think the Desert-like environment should affect the city?

Well people are insane that is for sure... I can see it now,
Come see the black desserts of the demon wastes!
Hunt the spawns of Khyber etc during the day, drink and dance succubus cults at night!

On a more serious note. I would guess the houses would be low partly dug into the ground to avoid the harsh winds I imagine this places has plenty of. I would guess the town needs the following:
1. Smithy armoury and normal.
2. Tavern/gathering house.
3. Church, and a big one to boot.
4. A dragonmarked building. a house dedicated to all the houses so to speak. It could be said only those that run this little organisation, but that would make it kinda obvious.

Another question you should be ready to answer is. "what are the church doing about the local barbarian tribes?" These people are set on defending the rest of the world against the taint of this land. And lets nothing leave the wastes.

If house lyrandar is involved you might rule that the town has a more calm weather.

hope it helps

Well i think a Castal would be there becaues the are in a wastland with demon and barbarian. With the land has different resources then other places. They could have different stones, metals, plants and dragonshards. With all these thing i think there would be quarries, smithies, finding guilds or House Tharashk and herbs shops. So i would think that there would be shops for the people and for PC going out on to the planes. There would be docks for the boats. Wells for water. farms with channals for watering the farms (water from th wells or a river close by). The Chruch like skrap-san said. Walls, towers and other things for a defences. I think a library, school and brach of the Morgrave University for people look at the ruins.

If you need help with what poeple would be doing:

Chruch is try to get the barbarian.
People scouting the land. House Tarashk could help see as this would be a greate place for looking for Dragonshards.
People hunting as they try to get the farms
Soilders building tower (all ready have the wall up)
People looking for wells. House Lyrandar could be helping them look for the water underground.
House Tarashk can help find metals and goood places for stone mineing.

I think "Tourism" would work. People wanting to see landmarks and ruins.

hope you like this

Now this is just me, but I was under the impression that the demon wastes was a barren, unliveable wasteland were almost nothing grew. So at least a coble of druids of a certain level to help tend the land and make it liveable again would be nice too.

skrap-san that is real good i did not think about that it is real cool. I was think that the area would have a river so they might have a little life. The druids would want the demon wastes out of the world so i think that the druid sect would team up with the Silver Flame and so the town could be half Silver Flame buildings and half Druid buildings.

Ever read Discworld, specifically 'Colour of Magic'? "Tourist" is another word for "idiot".

Orlythugha.

O rly?
Sorry, I had to.

But anyway, there would of course be several houses set up. A few shops, although not many experts have come in yet, so more than likely, you won't be able to get Masterwork or Magic Items here, unless the church's cleric has cleric levels.

So, a smith and wood worker, a church, perhaps some (the 4 or others not realizing they don't have any power) Dragonmarked enclaves. As said before, towers would be built, or be being built, as the Demon Wastes are dangerous, and probably another place for the guards to group. A tavern is a maybe. Sure, everyone wants booze, but it's not going to get a lot of customers until people settle and there's a reason for people to go into the town.

More likely, one person knows how to get alcohol and everybody else just goes over to their place to acquire the intoxicating beverage of their choice.

I'd figure on a Jorasco healer or two. Even if they're not one of the houses involved in setting this up, neglecting to provide a healer in a place like the Demon Wastes is not going to have good results.

Only 01 Paladin and 300 civilians in The Demon Wastes!
What a Bummer! :P

You have 07 adventurers taking up the call.
If they are not totally insane , they should research the area first before travelling there.
As the main settlement is being set up from Thrane ,
i would expect a fortified manor house (at least) , surrounded by a sturdy wall.

Wood is likely be scarce for building and have to be imported.

How do the locals survive in the area?
Are they Hunter/Gatherers?
I don't see the area as being greatly suitable for crops or herding ,
unless there is some kind of dinosaur that has domestic use.

Hire a Vermin Lord (MM III) and use Giant Ants to patrol all the tunnels under your village.
(these will be the ones you built over presumably)
