| #1PJammaGodDec 02, 2008 4:38:05 | I was flicking through the various Eberron books I have last night and after a random thought ocurred I began to further research an apparent pattern that was emerging. After digging around further I realised (dunno if this has been brought up on the boards before) that the Aberrant Marks as they are described in the ECS could actually be tied into the 13 outer planes as we know them. As a quick segue it's known that the 13 planes do tie with the standard dragonmarks (information drawn from page 142 of Dragonmarked)- Zarantyr - Storm (Lyrander) Olarune - Sentinel (Deneith) Therendor - Healing (Jorasco) Eyre - Making (Cannith) Dravago - Handling (Vadalis) Nymm - Hospitality (Ghallandra) Lharvion - Detection (Medani) Barrakas - Finding (Tharashk) Rhaan - Scribing (Sivis) Sypheros - Shadow (Phiarlan and Thuranni) Aryth - Passage (Orien) Vult - Warding (Kundarak) I listed these because the moons are also said to have ties to the thirteen planes of existence and it's even said that there was once a 13th moon and 13th month (Giant calenders have an additional month in them). So you could say that the standard marks are tied to the moons, while the Aberrant marks are tied more properly to the planes. Looking at the powers as described in ECS and Dragonmarked (pg 140-141) there seems to be a theme behind them. Daanvi (the Perfect Order) - tensers floating disk, touch of idiocy, dominate person Dal Quor (Region of Dreams) - jump, scare, phantasmal killer Dolurrh (realm of the dead) - detect secret doors, death knell, enervation Fernia (Sea of Fire) -burning hands, scorching ray, flame strike Irian (Eternal Day) - light, false life, slay living Kythri (Churning Chaos) - produce flame, darkvision, fire shield Lamannia (Twilight Forest) - pass without trace, summon swarm, insect plague Mabar (Endless Night) - inflict light wounds, vampiric touch, mass inflict light wounds, Risia (Plain of Ice) - chill touch, sleet storm, cone of cold Shavarath (the Battleground) - shield, rage, fear Syrania (Azure Sky) - feather fall, bestow curse, feeblemind, Thelanis (Faerie Court) - charm person, suggestion, cloudkill Xorita (Realm of Madness) - cause fear, contagion, confusion, Now bear in mind this is merely my interpretation of how the aberrant mark would relate to the planes. But it seems perhaps a little coincidental. Maybe that's why the aberrant marks are they way they are, waxing and waning with power much like the planes. |

Do they line up with the planes/houses/dragonmarks/moons/aberrant marks? There are twelve recognized nations under the Thronehold Treaty, with one nation Cyre being noticeably destroyed. Does this link them to the planes/houses/dragonmarks/moons/aberrant marks/dwarven clans? There were 67 renegade Quori spirits that escaped Dal Quor and bonded with monks of Adar to become the Kalashtar 6+7 = 13 however the leader of those renegade Quori was hunted down and killed by the Dreaming Dark. Leaving 66 6+6 = 12. Does this link them to the planes/houses/dragonmarks/moons/aberrant marks/dwarven clans/nations of Khorvaire? I could go on but its basically one of the settings biggest Macguffins, and a good one too. There is a pattern, but its a pattern without a set in world meaning, it means whatever the DM wants it to. In reality its just a play on words. 13 is a Baker's dozen, the setting was created by Kieth Baker, within the setting sets of 13 (a baker's dozen) crop up but one has been lost/destroyed leaving the number 12. Some of these sets of thirteen line up, or can be made to line up, but again, its all just a big red herring... unless you, the DM MAKE it important. |
| #3PJammaGodDec 02, 2008 8:54:28 | I'm well aware of the Twelve and One theme behind much of Keith Baker's work. I was just looking over the Aberrant marks and noted a certain theme going. These themes are even mentioned in Dragonmarked (Fear, Fire, Cold, Mental Domination), but I wanted to take them one step further and see if the theme worked in regards to the planes. I'm not sure if you're attempting to be constructive or condescending Nived, but I'll be a positive sort of person and assume the former rather than the later. Like I said, just a random thought. |

| #5PJammaGodDec 04, 2008 8:12:54 | I was looking over dates for major events in Eberron (in regards to the What if the mourning didn't happen thread) and realised something. 994 YK was the year of the mourning. 9 + 4 = 13... *head-desk* Curse you Keith Baker, you've got me suffering from Apophenia!!! :P |

| #7balardDec 04, 2008 19:56:10 | The moons are linked to the planes too. I remember reading somewhere that the destruction of the dal quor moon was the cause of the plane huge distance from Eberron. |
| #8PJammaGodDec 06, 2008 21:50:25 | The moonbreaker project, it's hinted at on pg 158 of City of Stormreach. |
