Adapting Scales of War to Eberron

Hey guys!

I am DMing a Scales of War campaign for some teens at my job. I used Dungeon pre-gen adventure in order to introduce them to D&D 4th edition. Now, they are approching the end of the adventure, just became level 3, and I was looking to introduce them to Eberron. As in: they were always on Eberron, but it wasn't relevant for the players until now.

So, I was wandering how could I adapt the story and encounters from the 2nd part of the Scales of War Campaign to fit an Eberron game, or how could I jump from the end of 'Rescue at Rivenroar' to something else that makes sense in Eberron.

The first thing that comes up is that the RedHand come from Darguun, the region of Rivenroar is near New Cyre and the Mournland, but I don't know yet about the plot, maybe Riedra is being manipulative on Darguun (against or with Llesh Haruuc, the hob leader) or something linked to a rogue dragon scion of Tiamat in Darguun.

Throw some ideas or build on mines. Any help is welcomed, just remember I'm DMing for teens that are of the "kick in the door style and loot the treasure style of gamers". I would like to progressively develop their role-playing selves.

Thanks

There's a pretty cool campaign that is doing this up on Obsidian Portal; try searching there for "Scales of Eberron" and you should find it. Then dive into their adventure log to see how they're adapting it. The DM seems pretty creative, and there should be plenty of ideas.

As far as "Siege of Bordrin's Watch" and "Shadowrift at Umbraforge" go (and really most of the rest of Scales of War through the heroic tier), you just need to pick an Eberron city that's sort of near some mountains to use as a home base; somewhere that it's plausible that Orcs might be organizing a new offensive with some nefarious help. The campaign above picked the Breland/Droaam border, but it would easily make just as much sense to set the home base in the Mror Holds area (especially since Overlook is supposedly a Dwarven city in Scales of War). In fact, if you plop Overlook down in Eberron somewhere in the Mror Holds (maybe further south, towards the Talenta Plains and the Blade Desert), you should have a pretty easy time adapting most of the heroic level Scales of War adventures.

However, one must admit, that at higher levels the Scales of War storyline takes an ever increasingly un-Eberronian bent, as the overall story is about a titanic battle between Bahamut and Tiamat. The paragon tier finds the heroes mostly facing off against and trying to thwart a threatened Githyanki invasion from the astral sea, and epic tier involves the heroes trying to thwart Tiamat's schemes and exarchs more directly. While it's not impossible to adapt this storyline for Eberron (replace Bahamut with a powerful ancient dragon from Argonessen, and set most of the epic storyline there, and make the Tiamat's schemes more about freeing herself than trying to kill Bahamut), it would probably be a good idea to put some major thought into how you want to handle the rest of the campaign by the time you get to "The Temple Between", the last Scales of War adventure in the heroic tier. If you don't want to use the Githyanki threat, you will want to change the villain of "The Temple Between" and come up with a different idea for the paragon tier.

Of course, all of this assumes that you're in it for the long haul, and your group hangs together for a year or two. If not, then paragon and epic tier considerations might not matter. In any case, best of luck to you!

Wow, this was really helpful, thanks !

To be honest, I don't think my group will stay together for another year. However, I'm working hard on mobilizing other teens to try the game (mainly those playing mmorpgs, à la WoW) so I am running an open group where players can come and go.

I was thinking of making the Githyanki invasion a possible Inpired/DD threat, and therefore, using Dal Quor as a battleground for Dream-version PCs (think the Matrix), making it possible to use epic-level characters, or late paragon level sooner.

I'll go get a look at that Obsidian Portal adaptation.

Keep them coming
