Amphibious landing airships

Could an airship be constructed to allow it to land in a body of water, say a lake or other coastal city? Could the bound elemental permit this.

I realize that the elemntal rings on an airship make it impossible for it to land on ground but why couldn't it land on water.

Regarding what's possible, the answer is always yes, especially in Eberron.  Just ask yourself, why was the restriciton there, and what will happen if I remove it?  In this case, the restriction is so that even air travel is point-to-point, not totally free ranging.

If you want to create an exception, you could certainly do so.  Perhaps it requires a specially constructed airship, where the rings rotate to a horizontal position when it lands.

Metaphysically speaking, if you bound a thunderblast cyclone or windfiend fury as the controlling elemental, you'd get the benefits of both air and water (and wouldn't have to have an adjustable ring).  It'd be a little slower in the air, I would assume (air elementals apparently don't have the push that fire elementals do).

That's all you have to remember.

I did precisely this in a campaign at the tail end of 3.5. The PCs were given access to an airship that was a cutting-edge prototype; it was faster, nearly silent, invisible when it wanted to be and could make amphibious and ground landings. The spar arms were arranged in an x-shape around the hull and the bottom pair folded in to become landing skids when needed, though the ship could only put down in a wide, flat space since the elemental had to be suppressed for the process and thus maneuverability was minimal.

I intentionally removed the point-to-point restriction for the campaign since that worked better, but always kept firm reigns on the airship itself in case the PCs decided to simply wander off- the crew was Lyrandar, and while there was a stormchild in the party that could've theoretically piloted it, I made it clear that if they decided to simply run off with the ship, Lyrandar would make them suffer for it.

I also think my PCs greatly enjoyed having the ability to call in airstrikes from time to time. Turns out having Eberron's equivalent to a Spectre flying close-air on your side is a good way to level the field when the bad guys send Warforged Titans after you.

Great suggestion. I've always wondered at House Lyrandar's ability to create prototype airships and how they would protect these cutting edge creations

While my knee-jerk reaction to joeburgos's issue was, 'hey, wind elemental would probably work just fine', the concept of an elemental airship that basically has VTOL ability greatly tickles my fancy. Gonna file that one away for later consideration.

That just made me smile.
