| #1skelekonAug 28, 2015 6:50:10 | So Appendix I in ‘The Grand History of Eberron’ lists Asmodeus as one of the Overlords of Khyber. Is there any reference for this in any published material – I have been unable to find anything on it?
I know that the cosmology was changed for 4E to place Asmodeus in Baator, so I presume this would date from the 3E era. |
| #2EnderXenocide0Aug 29, 2015 13:28:15 | As far as I'm aware, Asmodeus wasn't mentioned in Eberron canon until 4E came around. |
| #3BeoricAug 29, 2015 21:27:04 | There is a reference in Fiendinsh Codex 2 to Apects of Asmodeus being from Shavarrath. GHoE has been pretty reliable fo rme though. so I'm willing to bet it was mentioned in passing somewhere. Probably a web enhancement.
OTOH, I just found a thread from 5 years ago discussing all the known overlords, and Asmodeus wasn't in it. And Keith posted several times on that thread: http://community.wizards.com/content/forum-topic/2592726. |
| #4EnderXenocide0Aug 30, 2015 10:50:14 | If Asmodeus was listed as in Khyber back in 3.5, I would assume it came from some "X in Eberron" sidebar from a non-Eberron book. That said, I can't honestly think of any references that I know of. While sometimes they give interesting ideas, I personally feel they don't usually fit into Eberron canon super nicely. I, too, like GHoE, but there's been one or two references to things that I can't find a location for (I'd love it if we could go through it and give citations for things to help other fans out).
Here's the relevant section from the Grand History of Eberron:

| #5skelekonAug 31, 2015 6:20:15 | In the H1:Keep on the Shadowfell Eberron Conversion (Dungeon 155) it's implied that Orcus is an Overlord , so there's at least a semi-canonical reference for it.
I couldn't find anything similar for Asmodeus, so I had been wondering if there was a web article or something I'd missed. |
| #6EnderXenocide0Aug 31, 2015 3:41:25 | Now that's one I didn't know about. That's a 4E conversion, yes? It's probably the reason I'm unfamiliar with it. I haven't adopted any of the changes 4E made to the setting and don't intend to. I like my 3.5 canon, personally. |
| #7HellcowSep 18, 2015 9:27:53 | I'm a little late here, but there is in fact a web article that you missed: The Eye on Eberron article about Baator. Unfortunately, it's subscriber only, so you may not be able to read it. Per this article, Asmodeus began as an exceptionally powerful angel...
Asmodeus was the first pillar of Daanvi, created by Siberys in the dawn of time. He was a mighty force for order, and he claims to have taught Aureon the ways of both magic and politics. He laid the cornerstone of the Infinite Archive, and his treatises on leadership are some of the finest in existence. For eons he governed Daanvi in Aureon’s name. As human civilization thrived and worship of the Sovereign Host spread across Eberron, Asmodeus grew jealous of the distant deities. Siberys had fallen. The Sovereigns had ascended to an unknown place, if they still existed at all. And who offered prayers to Asmodeus? Where were his temples?
Per the article, Asmodeus led an Astral upring but was defeated by those loyal to the Sovereigns and he and his followers were imprisoned in Baator, a prison demiplane. Per this cosmology, Baator has only been unlocked since the Mourning, so Asmodeus and other Archdevils are extremely recent additions to the scene. |
