So I'm thinking about making a Half-Elf of House Medani for an online game, and I hit a wall more or less in terms of creating the character. I realized I don't actually know where my character would be from. He is going to be an inquisitive, trained by House Medani to see the facts and derive information from them. I can't decide on a class, either.

So where would a member of House Medani be from? Do people from the dragonmarked houses live all over? Even so the PHB only gives so much info about the Five Nations and the area around it. And do any of you have any suggestions for a class for an inquisitive? I don't want to play a Wizard (so far the only character I've made is a wizard). I wrote up an Avenger of Aurenal in character builder, but I don't really know how that would work in terms of background, unless as part of his inquisitive training he was put through the ringer in the name of the "knowledge god."

House Medani has enclaves throughout all of the five nations and in lands such as Zilargo and Stormreach (in Xen'drik). Their headquarters, however, are in Sharn, Breland.

House Medani are troubleshooters. They're not only detectives, they're interrogators, bounty hunters, and body guards. They get to the truth. They know things before others know them. They see things before others see them. They act before others act.

No matter what class you chose, make sure that you have training in the Perception and Streetwise skills. Arcana (for detect magic) will be very useful as well. History may also help in recalling bits of history related to a current situation, while Intimidate can help in pulling secrets out of less cooperative individuals. Improving your initiative score can help reinforce your natural knack for seeing danger coming. If the class you take doesn't already have Ritual Caster, then pick it up and get those scrying rituals.

Ranger, with less focus on the survivalist background and more on the capable tracker/quick skirmisher can work. Rogue would do well too. You can play up your larcenous traits as connections to or experience with the underworld. You can be a Shaman, only you eschew tribal trappings in favor of modern dress. Your spirit companion- not of the bear or panther spirit-, but rather, a magically summoned guardian ala Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound. Or you're an artificer who uses gadgets and tools to assist in the investigation.

The Eberron Player's Guide gives many backgrounds and suggestions for Medani characters as well, including a Paragon Path. Try looking to those for inspiration.
