#4 Madfox11 May 17, 2011 6:56:03	Actually, FR is the only D&D setting were I have seen the balloon-type of flying vessels. Mystara simply had levitating ships that used their sails to propel themselves forward. Most of these flying ships looked exactly like seaworthy ships, and they could land in water in a pinch. Only more "modern" designs in that setting diverged from the traditional galleon designs. Spelljammer ships also never looked like flying zepelins either. The elemental ring is distinctly Eberron though, and a nice unique touch. Game mechanically it is not really necessary, but nor is the balloon ;)

It might be a more common fantasy trope*, but it is just not a particular common D&D trope ;) (Even in FR flying ships are extremely rare, especially with the destruction of the only nation building them.) * Although to be honest, flying ships are not all that common in fantasy (unless you consider Space Opera fantasy ;) ), or at least not the fantasy I have read/seen. I suspect flying feels a bit too modern, and the hardships of travelling through wilderness is just too much part of the fantasy trope to allow it to be circumvented by flying ;)
