Mar 27, 2009 18:31:25 Whether or not 'gods' exist, powerful entities definitely do, and there's some considerable evidence that there is a sort of deific ascension (much like the Stargate sense). Vestiges could quite easily be described as remnants of forgotten demon overlords, unsuccessful would-be gods, extraplanar entities that can't quite break through into prime reality, and so forth.

Evil creatures, such as rakshasa, rajahs, and the like can't ever really be destroyed. They're part of the raw fabric of the Material Plane, and if you utterly kill one a new being will eventually form in its place. This is why the Silver Flame is described as a binding flame, and there are so many references to rajahs being sealed under various locations (Adar, for example); the next-best thing is to lock them away and imprison them.

What if, during the Age of Demons, a small group of couatl and dragons found a compromise? Something that wouldn't destroy a rajah outright, but wouldn't place him in a single, easily-unlocked prison either; it would instead shatter him into a thousand ineffectual pieces and leave them scattered across the globe, each one "alive" but unable to wield the tiny fraction of power left to it.

What if, over time, each of these pieces, unable to rejoin with the others, began attaching themselves spiritually to local personalities and powerful leaders, offering them a useful portion of power in exchange for being able to wreak some small sort of havoc on Eberron once more, and being able travel the globe in the body of another being in hopes of finding and reuniting with the other shards? Each fragment beginning to absorb and reflect the personality, goals, and history of the various people they attach to, and moving on when they were no longer useful; such that, by now, a "binder" might form a pact with Gulshaah the Demon Swordsman of the Dhakaani Empire one day, then with Sul'torkana of the Green Flames from the Age of Giants the next day, seeking out other pacts with the echoes of similarly-affected dragons, beasts, dragonmarked heirs, and the like...

A binder might seek out these pacts for any number of reasons; perhaps they simply want power, perhaps they seek to reunite the shards of the rajah, perhaps they believe that they are doing the forces of good a service by binding the rajah fragments to themselves so they cannot influence others.
