I'm making my first Eberron character and I'm interesting in making a Blood of Vol Invoker but I'm curious to see how people think such a character would work? Would this be a person who has made a deal directly with Lady Vol or would it be someone who has "unlocked" the divinity within their blood? Would it be something else entirely?

Right now I'm thinking it would be someone who has unlocked the divinity of their blood...they are on Lady Vol's radar but they don't necessarily know that and certainly don't have the "direct line to God" that a traditional Invoker might have.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would agree with you in that the best approach would simply be that invokers of the Seeker variety have simply unlocked the secrets to harness the divinity within or were simply born with such an uncanny ability. These would be role models for the faithful.

Hmm, interesting. Blood of Vol Clerics must tap into the divinity of their own blood but they likely do it in a refined, formulaic way that is copied amongst other Vol Clerics. As an Invoker you might be akin to a Sorcerer, gaining your powers through natural talent.

However, Invokers make pacts with their patron deity. So unless you want to change that assumption I imagine your character may have been approached by a powerful, and likely undead, priest of Vol and traded his blood (and something more?) for divine power? Did you make a pact with Vol herself? Are you a distant descendant or her line?

You could be a zealot, Seeker or otherwise, having pushed yourself to your limits in pursuit of perfection and in the process unlocking great power from your faith. In this sense you have made a pact with yourself to unlock your potential through rigorous training and other such behavior.

I'm in complete agreement with Marcus Majarra.

Maybe you've made a covenant with your congregation, tapping the collected divinity of all of their blood?

My current idea for such a character is a Seeker who sought to become a priest in his congregation. Part of the local ritual was to have the faithful perform a sacrament of Blood which the current priest would bless [Much like a Revelation Day event]. Before the ritual was begun, a Champion of The Faith [Likely a vampire] was sent to perform a special blessing- by adding a strange arcane potion, the drinker was bound to the terms of his vows as a priest [Specially prepared, not to insinuate Vol herself {As she may be a villian at high paragon levels}, and to force the character to use his powers in an adventuring context].

After drinking the Blood, it was as if the fully divinity in him was released, and for sometime he attempted to learn to use it in a combat and ritual application. Later he gets approached, and must follow an order as it was a part of his pact [Covenant].

Basically, he would appear to be the Warlock equivalent of a divine character. His powers are divine and not arcane, because he views it as drawing upon the divinity placed within him during the ceremony.

I haven't pounded out more than a rough draft yet, but so far it sounds like it might be interesting to try.

How about this. Invokers of the Blood of Vol made pacts with Antediluvian/Methuselah entities (maybe ancient vampires in torpor) who granted drops of their own blood (vitae) to the invokers thereby granting them power. :P

There is another nice option for a Blood of Vol invoker.

Although the faith teaches finding the divinity within, it is actually just a trap which Vol uses to lead people into becoming her pawns in order to reach this 'divinity'. As no person should be able to do it himself.

Now.. here comes the Invoker.. this is actually someone who HAS found the Divinity Within and has learned to channel it and uses magic that seems to have no limits (The divine magic the gods themselves wielded in ages passed). Not because he made a pact with Vol, but because he has found it within himself.

Now.. suddenly the faith has a living champion of this divinity. An example for the people to follow that isn't undead and therefore not under the (direct) influence of Lady Vol. But, seeing how he is an example, they can't just strike him down.

So.. you have a character that lives out the beliefs of the faith, but is actually against the powers that is behind it all. A very interesting concept in my book.

This is made of pulpy-noir goodness! The shades of grey such a character would embody would make the "Blood of Vol are all baddies" idea that most PC's seem to develop much less valid, while at the same time validating the power of the faith itself, regardless of it's current "leader". Pure awesomesauce!

Thank you ;)

It was actually designed with just that.. not being straightforward and creating a bit of internal faith turmoil around the character.

How will the normal, day to day, follower of the Blood react?
How will outsiders of the faith react?
How will the Emerald Claw react?
How will lady Vol react?

Now.. if you really wanna make a character like that a focus point of an entire campaign.. have him/her manifest an abberant mark that, later on, is found out to be The Mark of Death. That would truly make the excrement hit the rotating cooling device.
