| #1DargurdSep 29, 2009 16:03:08 | Hi All, After a 3 month break from the Karrnath Campaign i've been running i could do with some ideas to help me kick start the campaign. I run 4e for a small group and the characters are Ranger 7, Wizard 6 and Paladin 6. They are based in a small hill village surrounded by heavy wooded region to the NW of Lake Dark. Winter is about to set in and they spent the summer and fall fighting Emerald Claw who are operating in the area. I'd really appreciate some ideas that can help me to get the game back up and running with a bang ! Thanks and regards... |

Since you're getting into the changes in the seasons, you could have someone interfering with the progression of seasons. Either winter arrives in force and the region is immediately hit by a blizzard, or perhaps winter doesn't arrive at all. Maybe it's caused by an ice mage lich working for the Emerald Claw or maybe it's the work of an eladrin in the plane-hopping eladrin city that is in Karrnath. I forget its name. |

A few ships might be stuck in the icy mass, but the scheme behind is that Emerald Claw needed to get at the bottom of the lake, and the easiest way they figured out was to make the lake an ice block and dig down with fire elemental bound tools. At the bottom, there is obviously something worth all this trouble, you choose. Rekko |

You might need to add a big underwater monster that dies because of the freezing to make this stick ;) |

| #8DargurdOct 01, 2009 10:36:11 | Maybe its only frozen in one small corner to help in some nefarious plot with an object under the water ? I think that might give me an option. |
| #9GurvOct 02, 2009 9:49:37 | A water breathing ritual is great if you just need to pick up something at the bottom, like adventurers so often do. But if you want to build a facility/eldritch machine, you need more manpower than you can hope to bring with a water breathing ritual. Not to mention the difficulties of building underwater. It just makes everything harder. In real life it takes training to work in strange environments like water or space. The PCs get to ignore the difficulties because of sheer awesomeness and adrenaline. But the mad scientist types aren't meant for that kind of thing. There is a reason that they work in laboratory environments, after all. Of course, there's also the 'dangerous-monster-that-needs-freezing' theory. I'm kind of partial to the idea that its the monster they're after. Harvesting dangerous lake-creatures in an preserved, undamaged state sounds twisted enough for Karrnath. |

| #13Demetri_KnighthawkOct 08, 2009 23:10:47 | Adding to the other ideas first: an actual leviathan is the guardian to an ancient relic and as it is a cold blooded being, they seek to freeze the lake to put the beast to sleep so they dont have to fight it...just for the twist, the leviathan is a an aquatic warforged-like being (thinking of the hydra units from terminator 4) from the previous great wars and is still fully functional, the cold water keeping the parts in peak condition. new idea:All the animals are leaving for an unknown reason and after the fall equinox... the days seem to be getting longer once more, as if the land was retreating to summer once again, only this region seems to be aflicted as snow storms seem to brew along the horizon. THe source of this is a misguided priest of pelor seeking a new aplication to the time aspect of his gods influence. |
| #14AvonRekaesOct 09, 2009 16:31:05 | Pelor? You mean Dol Arrah, Sovereign of Sun and Sacrifice. |
| #15Demetri_KnighthawkOct 11, 2009 3:41:42 | Yes, my bad, does she still govern time as well? |
