Challenge rating for possessed vessels

Aug 02, 2008 7:26:42 Hello.

Wasn't sure if this is the right forum to post this question, but... too late now.

A thing that i have been curious about lately, and that i can't seem to find anywhere specified exactly: how does the possession from a Quori modify the challenge rating for the vessel? Obviously, stronger spirits add more than the simpler ones, but i haven't been able to figure out if there's a exact rule for it.

Well, no duh. It says so right in the Inspired entry! (Although that post was justified by the fact that he obviously didn't read said entry)

Aug 05, 2008 9:41:26 My point (which i didn't make clear in my post, now i notice) was, since there are a ton of different vessels, what happens if i fill the same vessel with 2 different Quori spirits, greatly different in power? (to make a hypothetic example without considering bloodlines, charisma score and so on: what's the CR if a Kalaraq wants to control the same vessel showed in the example in the ECS, the poor 4th level psion vessel? Still just a CR 5, same as with a weaker Tsucora spirit?)

Aug 05, 2008 21:53:10 Because the Quori isn't the one giving it levels, yes. It's the same as how there are different Quori in Kalashtar, but all have the same LA +0. It creates the same creature, a psionic humanoid with a powerful being inside. The 4 levels are psion are from the levels gained by said creature after being possessed.

My problem is that with this system, our 4th level psion vessel being possessed by, say, a Tsoreva spirit, gains Inertial Armor and Dissolving Weapon psi-like stuff, for a CR of 5. The same vessel with a Kalaraq would gain things like Energy Wave, Psychic Crush, Insanity and a load of at-will abilities i won't even bother listing. All for the same CR.
Messing around with mixing and matching Quori and vessels will need a bit of attention then. Or simpler, not straying from the suggested pairings of vessels/spirits.

The point is moot because the Quori can only possess Inspired who have an adequate Charisma score. The Kalaraq is too powerful (in Charisma) to possess most of the lame, published Inspired, especially if you increase the Kalaraq mental stats by 10, as Keith Baker suggests (and originally wrote them).

But there's no set rule. Adjust the CR as appropriate.
