Example: Cask, the changeling artificer from S:CoT, sold the formula for making Dragon's Blood to the Boromar Clan and is now in Stormreach hiding from the Daask Thanks! |

He was caught selling elemental binding secrets to House Cannith directly. He's now hiding out in Stormreach from the Trust, and from House Cannith contacts who are desperate to get the information out of him before the Trust gets to him first. |

In my current game, the "Lord of the Blades" is foiled by an ambitious warforged slaver and gun-runner called, the "Merchant of Death." His scheme is pretty simple, kidnap warforged from the Mournland and elsewhere, so they can be sold to the highest bidder in Xendrik, Karnnath, Aundair, or to other dodgy individuals flouting the Thronehold Treaty. One of his salesmen is a dwarf, Mr. Ovnore (dwarf aristocrat 2/artificer 6, CR 7), who repairs and sells the warforged captured by the "Merchant." Before he was stopped by the Party, he was attempting to sell warforged to the giant-king Skyfather to aide in his war against the drow tribes. In any case, the point is, a criminal artificer could be warforged slaver, peddling his merchandise to the Storm Lords. |

The three Cannith factions, Warforged, Giants and even the Dreaming Dark and Kalashtars could be on the hunt to find him. |

You certainly didn't. And now an area twelve times the size of Wroat is gone from The King's Forest and Boranel wants a word with you about his third-favourite hunting ground. Stormreach was a perfect place to hide, since you'd gained a reputation as something of a coward, with a distate for the seedy underbelly of society and it's cast of rough tough ne'er do-ells. Unfortunately, that reputation is quite well justified. But you'll have to put up with it for a while as you join with a rag-tag band of gold-hungry adventurers to earn enough money for a better, less scummy hiding place. At least you're out of Boranel's reach, right? |

As an estranged member of that House, you are hiding in Stormreach because while you may not be mad, technically, you sure made a big mess of things. Maybe your experiments were unethical (the use of real skin to disguise warforged from the 'Forbidden Forge' adventure comes to mind) and have brought down the wrath of the Code of Galifar on your head. Maybe you made some construct that went out of control and cost Cannith a facility, people, and gold. So either the Sentinel Marshals (or some other law-enforcement group) is after you for Code violations, or Cannith is after you to make you pay their damage bills. |
| #8naturaxJul 11, 2009 22:51:22 | Thanks for your help, everyone! I love that the boards are so good for this sort of thing. I ended up going with this: Botch was born and raised among the greatest artificers of the gnomish nation of Zilargo, but his desire to complete his projects at all costs ruined his career and his reputation. Always requiring more materials for his experiments, he purchased some Khyber shards from individuals who turned out to be members of a Cult of the Dragon Below. The information he traded was used to infiltrate and kill fellow artificers, forcing Botch to quickly flee to Stormreach in order to avoid the wrath of the Trust. Now he is trying to get by in the dangerous frontier city by doing odd jobs, but he is badly craving the ability to continue his experiments. |
