Something like the Fate, Shadows of Yesterday, or Giants rules, that are adaptable to characters whose motivations matter more than their inventory. (I'm not putting down D&D-- just suggesting that dragons kind of break the questing-party mold.) Still, if I were gonna stick to the traditional system (can we call 4th that yet?), I'd want to toss in some rules for hoard keeping (maybe a point system like the organization affiliation charts?), prophecy pursuit, and maybe bring in the Xorvintaal "great game" concept from Monster Manual V (or was it IV?). I'd posit that the PC dragons start off in the Vast of Argonessen, and then let them figure out how to survive, carve a niche, and/or return to the Thousand Flights. |

The dragons are plot devices, not monsters/characters. But, if you did a Council of Wyrms type thing where the entire party are dragons that have to do undercover missions and all that, then yes, I think that could be workable. I just don't think there would be a way to just have a dragon PC in an otherwise "normal" Eberron game. |

The dragons are plot devices, not monsters/characters. how about something like this: the propherchy mentions someone who " travels with the dragon" that will do something or another. then in order to make this part become true an faction of the chamber sends one of their youngest to travel with whomever tey belive is the one that the propherchy speaks about |

Basically, it comes down to one thing, power. If the PC has the option of using draconic power, then that has to be taken into account with the character, which even for the weakest of dragons is going to be a massive LA. If its going to be a "Well, I just won't use that power" kind of thing, then I would insist on them using normal race stats, and they can just have fluff of "Well, I'm really a dragon, but I just can't show you any proof", in which case again, they're not actually playing a dragon, they're playing a Human with a weird backstory. If they want a character that can use parts of their draconic power, I'd say "Play a shifter, take Beasthide and Secondary Trait Razorclaw or Longtooth, and just describe your shifting as giving you scales and claws/teeth", where again, they're using a normal race with a weird backstory at that point. So no, I do not allow actual draconic characters, not even half dragons. Now, a Shifter Fighter/Sorcerer that takes levels in Dragon Disciple as a way of doing "Well, as my friends get more powerful, I can safely use more and more of my draconic power", that could work. I kind of like that idea, actually. I might have to go stat one of those up! :D |

| #9EdymnionJun 02, 2008 21:11:56 | The -2 Charisma, despite the awesome backstory, is really going to hurt that character. How so? Just go heavier on the Fighter side and only have a single level dip in Sorcerer. Take spells that don't require a caster level, like True Strike, and then don't worry about it. All you'll need is a charisma of 11. Heck, you don't actually even need that, you could be a Sorcerer with a negative charisma, and just not actually ever cast anything. Or if you prefer more combat friendly spells, go ahead and take Shield and Magic Missile, and drop a feat or two into Practiced Spellcaster. |
