| #1dblizzardAug 03, 2009 20:54:30 | I have started playing around with the Monster Builder and decided to convert some 3.5 Eberron creatures to 4E. My first experiment is the Dolgaunt. Thoughts? Dolghast Level 4 Brute Medium aberrant humanoid XP 175 Initiative +3 Senses Perception +3; blindsight Stench aura 2; any living creature within the aura takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks. HP 70; Bloodied 35 Regeneration 5 AC 19; Fortitude 17; Reflex 15; Will 16 Speed 6 M Claw (standard; at-will) • Necrotic Claw; +7 vs. AC; (Claw); 1d6 + 4 M Double Attack (standard; at-will) The dolghast makes two claw attacks.; 1 Dissolution (free; at-will) If both claw attacks from the double attack hit the same target, the target is dazed (save ends). Alignment Unaligned Languages — Str 18 (+6) Dex 12 (+3) Wis 12 (+3) Con 14 (+4) Int 6 (---) Cha 15 (+4) |
| #2AvonRekaesAug 04, 2009 10:30:09 | Hi DBlizzard! This is a great idea. I might chime in when I get home and make a few Quori for this thread. As for your dolghast: How bout giving it the undead keyword? I know dolghasts were only half-undead or something, but the undead keyword carries less rules baggage in this edition than in 3e. Did effects that worked specifically on undead work on the 3e dolghast? If so I'd give em the keyword. Also, two attacks per turn on a non-elite, non-solo monster is fairly odd. Did you grab the basic power design from another monster? If so ignore the following advice. If you made this custom, I'd redo the dolghast to only have one attack per turn, since it's not an elite or solo. I'd be more likely to have its power be this: M Dissolution Claw (standard; at-will) • Necrotic Claw; +7 vs. AC; [High Normal Damage Value] necrotic damage and make a secondary attack against the target. Secondary Attack: +5 vs. Fort; the target is dazed (save ends). Also, if you want to keep the two attacks, theres no reason to keep Dissolution seperate from Double Attack. You can word it like this: Double Attack (standard; at-will) The dolghast makes two claw attacks. If both attacks hit the same target, the target is dazed (save ends). Also, make sure you note the type of damage for the claw. Like: M Claw (standard; at-will) • Necrotic Claw; +7 vs. AC; (Claw); 1d6 + 4 necrotic damage. |
| #3dblizzardAug 04, 2009 19:06:21 | How bout giving it the undead keyword? I know dolghasts were only half-undead or something, but the undead keyword carries less rules baggage in this edition than in 3e. Did effects that worked specifically on undead work on the 3e dolghast? If so I'd give em the keyword. Technically, they aren't undead, they are "half-dead." Not the same. Given the effects they gave are mostly gone from 4E (immune to crits, sneak attack, healed by positive energy etc.) it seemed better to ignore that ability. Instead I made them more durable but bumping their HP and defenses a bit. Perhaps adding a few of the immunites (poison) might be a good idea. Also, two attacks per turn on a non-elite, non-solo monster is fairly odd. Did you grab the basic power design from another monster? If so ignore the following advice I created it custom, but used similar monsters of the same level for comparison. The attack's damage is "low" to allow for the fact there are two of them. The "dissolution" ability seems to be they key flavor of the dolghast (beyond the "half-dead" that is quite odd for 4E) and it requires two attacks to pull it off. Also, if you want to keep the two attacks, theres no reason to keep Dissolution seperate from Double Attack. You can word it like this: I thought about that. Dissolution being it's own power seemed the way to go, rather than "demoting" it to a side-effect of the double attack. Also, make sure you note the type of damage for the claw. Like: That's a Monster Builder flaw. |
| #4AvonRekaesAug 04, 2009 23:04:03 | It's not a flaw, you just have to add the damage info yourself. You can always call the double attack "Dissolution Frenzy" or something. |
| #5AegeriAug 05, 2009 6:42:53 | That's a Monster Builder flaw. No it's not. The power can have necrotic damage as a keyword but the damage does not have to be necrotic. For example, your power may do 1d6 + 4 damage, and ongoing 5 necrotic damage (Save ends). Meaning it has the necrotic keyword, but the main part of the damage roll isn't necrotic damage. This is a cleaner way of doing things, even if it is a bit more work in adding things like "necrotic" damage onto the damage line specifically. |
| #6dblizzardAug 05, 2009 21:16:00 | Here is an attempt at the Rancid Beetle Swarm. I used the Rot Scarab Swarm as the basis, and snagged the spawn ability from some undead or another. Still need to figure out how the Beetle Rot Disease works in 4E. Also, I need to stat up the Rancid Beetle Zombie. I kept him as soldier, but could easily be convinced he has another role. I moved him to large, since the 3.5 version was large. Not a lot of large swarms in 4E, though. |
| #7AvonRekaesAug 05, 2009 23:57:51 | A little late, but here's my first contribution:
Really no way to do it's 3e full attack justice (2 pincer attacks, 4 claw attacks, and then the sting) without turning it into an elite or solo. I decided to keep it a standard because Tsucora are "among the weakest" of Quori. The Sting was the big iconic attack of the 3e Tsucora, which basically delivered a Phantasmal Killer spell. Since 4e is less Save-or-Die-y, I figured an attack penalty and ongoing psychic damage was a good approximation of the target's own fears attacking it. Frightening Insinuation is the 3e Tsucora's Id Insinuation and Psychic Charm psi-like abilities mashed into one. Dominated seems like a really powerful ability to give to a standard monster, so I limited it to one turn and once per fight. Edit: After converting the Du'ulora I realized I missed a few things that should be common throughout all Quori. These are: Darkvision, Immunity to fear and sleep effects, and +2 to saving throws vs. charm. I downgraded the quori's immunity to charm effects since in 4e charm also includes domination effects and such, and I feel like as nightmares, immunity to domination isn't as core to their racial identity as immunity to fear and sleep (Since they ARE fear incarnate, and are dream creatures) I also converted their tendancy for DR overcome by Good weapons as a vulnerability to Radiant attacks. I feel this makes sense as the nightmare-quori have an affinity for shadow and the Kalashtar worship the great Light of the new age. So a weakness to representations of that universal Light is thematically appropriate. |

| #11AvonRekaesAug 07, 2009 14:30:37 | BTW, here is my list of 3.5 Eberron creatires to convert. It's not complete, and likely has a few already covered. Quori - Tsoreva Quori - Dream Master Quori - Tsucora Quori Indeed, you're missing the quori from Secrets of Sarlona, which were originally published in Keith Baker's Nightmares of Eberron Dragon article. They are the Du'loora, the Hashalaq, and the Kalaraaq. (Probably messed the spelling up right there, my book isn't handy this right second) Nice job, AvonRekaes. Thanks! If I may, I'd like to "call dibs" on the rest of the Quori. Also, I'd like to suggest editing that list into the top post and making links to the posts in which the monster is converted. It'd be a great index to use. Might even get it stickied. |
| #12AvonRekaesAug 07, 2009 16:31:53 | Just to "cement" my dibs on the Quori... :P
(For those that noticed the non-elite version posted earlier, I decided to make the Du'ulora elite because of its nature as a vanguard of the dreaming dark's forces, and its tendancy to act as battle-champions for Reidra while possessing an Inspired) |
| #13illathidAug 08, 2009 17:47:22 | Very nice job on the quori. I tried making a tsoreva but i'm not quite happy with it. Thanks for taking up the challenge. What would be nice is a set of templates that allow possessed creatures to have some of the quori's powers. Something like this:
Tsucora Possession Elite Soldier Humanoid XP Elite Defenses +2 AC; +2 Will Saving Throws +2 Action Point 1 Hit Points +8 per level + Constitution score Powers R Frightening Insinuation (standard; encounter) - Charm, Fear, Psychic Ranged 10; +12 vs Will; 1d8+5 psychic damage and the target is dominated until the end of it's next turn. Dual Mind Any creature that attacks a Tsucora Possession’s Will must make two attack rolls and use the lower result. Languages Common, Quori, telepathy 5
|
| #14AvonRekaesAug 09, 2009 11:39:53 | Very nice job on the quori. I tried making a tsoreva but i'm not quite happy with it. Thanks for taking up the challenge. Thats a great idea. I wonder if there'd be a way to do templates without making them elite? I mean, the Dreaming Dark could decide the best host for a job is just a normal shlub, and he wouldn't be all that powerful. Also I think the Dreaming Dark possessed agents in the ECS aren't elite. Maybe the template could be used only to represent the Inspired? I think that would work perfectly |
| #15AvonRekaesAug 09, 2009 12:18:57 |
Decided to make them minions because thats essentially what they are. The Quori use Tsorevas as cannon fodder, and each Tsoreva only wishes to die an impressive enough death to reincarnate as a Tsucora. As for their abilities, they basically only had two: Frightful Strike and Dissolving Weapon. The mind blade explaination isn't really necessary, and since Frightful Strike happens on every mind blade hit, I just combined them into the Mindfright Blade. As for Dissolving Weapon, I kept it limited and decided to do something interested in making it ongoing acid damage. Ongoing damage of the same type never stacks, so there's no real concern about Tsoreva quori minions loading down the party defender wih 8 iterations of ongoing 3 acid damage. Also, sidenote, I decided to go back and add "resist psychic" to the list of things all quori should get. As powerful psionic entities of the mind, it makes sense, plus I think it's a good approximation of the 3e quori's Psionic Resisance. |
| #16AvonRekaesAug 09, 2009 13:31:25 | Aaaand while I have Magic of Eberron open:
This one was pretty difficult because the main shtick of the Dream Master was its Schism ability and psi-like abilities. I couldn't really give it all of its powers as new attacks cause it'd bloat the stat-block to high-heaven. I mainly used it's Tactics Round-by-Round to decide how to update it. I also tried to keep its dazing full-attack and Schism ability without making it an automatic TPK-machine. When compared to the Du'ulora, the Dream Master also only has the potential to damage three people a round, so I think it'll be okay. Also, if anyone's wondering, the name "Usvapna" comes from the back of Secrets of Sarlona, where I believe Keith Baker was trying to reconcile a few of the stylistic inconsistancies with the Magic of Eberron quori. (It seems like whoever made the Magic of Eberron quori assumed that all quori should be lobster-like monsters, and they didn't even give a "quori" name to the Dream Master. Plus the name "Dream Master" sounds as if they're really far up to totem pole when they're more like middle-management. Although the Dream Masters were noted as having been "directed" so I suppose its not that inconsistent, acknowledging that there were quori more powerful.) |
| #17GiloAug 09, 2009 14:27:21 | Nice work on those Quori - AvonRekaes. I especially liked that you set the Tsoreva as a minion, his spiderclimb and the Mind Schism applied with the Dream Master. The Quori use Tsorevas as cannon fodder, and each Tsoreva only wishes to die an impressive enough death to reincarnate as a Tsucora. This could be a fun power to add to the Tsoreva (imagine the shock and horror it will create at the game table :evillaugh ): Reincarnate When hit by a critical hit the Tsoreva Quori is destroyed but return at the beginning of its next turn as Tsucora Quori. |
| #18AvonRekaesAug 09, 2009 14:56:31 | Nice work on those Quori - AvonRekaes. I especially liked that you set the Tsoreva as a minion, his spiderclimb and the Mind Schism applied with the Dream Master. Thanks for the kind words! Part of me knows that Keith is probably writing up his own 4e quori stats for a Dragon Article, but I figure it'd be helpful to get some quori stats out now. Thanks for the encouragement ![]() This could be a fun power to add to the Tsoreva (imagine the shock and horror it will create at the game table :evillaugh ): Reincarnate When hit by a critical hit the Tsoreva Quori is destroyed but return at the beginning of its next turn as Tsucora Quori. Hah! That'd really be something. I'm not sure how I'd really go about doing that, since encounter design is a lot more structured in 4e and less of a crapshoot. A chance for a minion to turn into a non-minion monster brings up all sorts of logistical problems in my mind, but it is a pretty cool idea. I could definately see it being something more of a set-piece encounter, rather than inherent in all Tsoreva. |
| #19illathidAug 09, 2009 15:23:17 | Thats a great idea. I wonder if there'd be a way to do templates without making them elite? I mean, the Dreaming Dark could decide the best host for a job is just a normal shlub, and he wouldn't be all that powerful. Also I think the Dreaming Dark possessed agents in the ECS aren't elite. The reason I thought I'd leave them elites is because an elite is roughly equal to two normal creatures, and that's exactly what a possessed creature is. The increase to it's HP and and saving throws I was going to justify as the quori using it's psionic abilities to keep their chosen agent alive. I was thinking about maybe doing something when bloodied to show the toll taken on the possessing quori. I'm not quite sure though. Any feedback would be appreciated. Actually, not to be a know-it-all, but the Dreaming Dark possessed agents in the ECS are elites :P . And looking them over, they have an ability that should probably be added to the template, Dual Mind (which forces enemies attacking the will to reroll and take the worse result). |

Yeah, I plan on tweaking the list somewhat this week (probably move the Dolghast later and make the first post an index of sorts). It might even be good to have a list of official adaptions. I would be nice to have a list of Living Spells produced already, or creatures who could easily be lifted straight and called a Living Spell. |

Put the Kalaraq in it's own post for ease of indexing later. So the Kalaraq and the Hashalaq were probably the hardest for me to convert. I used the Secrets of Sarlona version for both. The SoS Hashalaq has that "attacker takes half damage" ability not present in the Dragon magazine article. I couldn't tell at first glance if the Kalaraq had any changes. So, the Kalaraq is notibly missing Focused Mind Seed. I briefly considered giving the Kalaraq an attack that exposed you to the Mind Seed disease, like lycanthropes expose you to various diseases like filth fever and moon frenzy, but I decided it was better to just leave as a fluff thing. If anything, I'd say that Focused Mind Seed is even worse than the Mind Seed disease and is just a ritual the Kalaraq can perform. That would have to be in a Lore section for it, though, since rituals are not placed in combat stat blocks. |

| #28AvonRekaesAug 28, 2009 15:06:15 | Welp, just because I've done the quori doesn't mean I'll stop contributing.
This is Lurking Two-Maws, one of the Legendary Hunts from City of Stormreach. I basically took a Fang Titan Drake (which is a T-Rex) and scaled it back 5 levels but also turned it into a solo. Then I grabbed the Swallow ability from a purple worm, and added a few other touches like Tentacle Bock and the Flailing Tentacles aura. |
| #29illathidAug 28, 2009 19:23:01 | Ok here's what I have so far for the Quori possessed creature templates so far. At the moment the template merely adds the mental powers and a few bonuses from each type of quori AvonRekaes has made (except for the Kalaraq). Also, right now all the attack rolls for the powers are at level +2, with the damage being the same as the original monster. However, I'm hoping to go through and change this to be a bit of better fit for each template, and I'm also trying to find some way making the damage scale with level as well. Anyways, let me know what you think.

(like for example, Dragons of Eberron) I was wondering if powers, creatures and items from some of the 3.5 source books had been officially converted at all, and came across this good start |
| #32sewerdragonJul 19, 2010 22:38:58 | Love all the Quori here. Any chance I could get you to send me the XML files for the QUori you worked up? That way I don't have to type up all the information into my Monster Builder (which I'm still learning to use... working on some conversions for Eyes of The Lich Queen right now - hence the need for a Tsucora Quori). On that note, anyone know any good sits to download monster builder files from? |

In the meantime, you can look through em on my wiki, which also includes my conversion of Scarrow (those scorpion-driders). exaltedsharn.wikidot.com/monsters |
