Converting the old Adventures from 3.5 to 4E

Currently i'm running the Scales of War adventure path, and while I like it, I feel very constrained. All of it is entirely planned out ( I know, it's an AP), but I have alot of free time and I used to spend it coming up with stuff for my old Eberron game. So i'm going to do my best to convert the old 3.5 adventures (Forgotten Forge, Shadows of the Last War, Whisper of the Vampire's Blade, Grasp of the Emerald Claw, Eyes of the Lich Queen) to 4E.

My reason for doing so, is that as of now there's no Eberron-specific adventures, at least not for another 4-5 months (after 4E eberron is released), and becasue of 4E's "so many encounters a day" logic it leaves me room to add in new encounters to the adventures, as well as possibly altering some of the more boring encounter areas (such as airship dock in Whispers, or maybe a little more "grand ballroom" for Whispers). Plus, I own them all, but only got to run Whispers for a different group before we switched to 4E.

I haven't started yet, I probably will later tonight. But i'm hoping the Eberron Community here can help me with some ideas that'll enhance the greatness of these adventures. Like I said, beacuse of 4E's so many fights a day, the adventures can fit more encounters in. So ideas for new encounters would be appreciated, as well as suggestions on modifying existing ones. Same goes for terrain, such as adding new rooms to a dungeon. So, just toss some ideas out there that you think would fit well in these adventures, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Hope to hear some responses soon, like I said i'm starting tonight. I'll start off converting the existing stuff, then i'll go back and add more later to finish it.

Thanks,

It's a grand and noble quest. And I will be chering for you, me and my group loved those adventures. Gave me some much needed love back for the game. And I will tinker with it for a bit, I know there is a conversion of the opening adventure floating around here somwhere on the boards. But I'm to lazy to look it up atm.

I think a great addition would be some well-integrated and thought out skill challenges. Check out the articles recently published on the Wizards website for guidelines; after reading them, my skill challenges went from "meh, whatever, I guess we have rules for this kind of thing now," to integral, awesome, and suspenseful multi-day roleplaying excursions. It also has great advice on how to figure out the right mix of skills so that everyone can participate, which is something I wouldn't have thought of.

What kind of format are you thinking of publishing it in? I might be interested in helping you convert to HTML (see e.g. a monster in HTML for an idea of my skills in this area), since that is by far the nicest format for sharing on the internet.

Since I really love Eberron and I also love adventure planning, feel free to IM or email me (using the contact links the forum provides) for brainstorming on specific things, or to run ideas you have past me.

(I don't want to promise anything though, since I am a super-busy student . Basically, I'd love to help, but I can't be depended upon.)

I wouldn't force it to have multiple encounters every day, which could be prevented storywise. If more than one encounter on that day in the story seems unnatural, just make it a hard one, Level+3. This will be a hard fight, but they're going into it fresh and it should make for a more exciting battle.

Domenic, I hadn't thought too much on the fromat as of yet. But if you're willing to help, i'm willing to accept. As of now i've decided to start the conversion process with Shadows of the Last War, and i've went through the adventure and recorded all the fights, what's in them, and whether or not they're the only fight for the day. I guess it's a start.

Now as a DM, like I said i'm running the Scales of War adventure path from Dungeon, and i've been running skill challenges and I still have a problem with them. I love the idea of them, but I still don't entirely comprehend them. Part of me thinks the skill challenge should be "secretly" ran in the background of a session, asking for checks as things happen, leaving the players unaware that they are actually in a skill challenge. But i've been told that you should let the players know that they're about to perticipate in a skill challenge, and should tell them the vital skills and amount of successes before failures. So after I post this, I plan on reading that article.
