#1 hastur_nz Aug 30, 2009 16:14:22	I need a bit of inspiration in putting together an encounter for my 4e campaign that features a Couatl. The suggested allies listed in the MM2 (3 deva knights-errant + 1 phoelarch warrior) are OK, but I'm not sure if including Deva is the best idea, and I don't see any inspiration in the Eberron books(not that I'm an expert). The background is that I'm converting the Savage Tide adventure path from 3.5 to 4e, and there's an encoutner in the Jungles of the Isle of Dread, specifically the Temple of the Jaguar, where the PC's can meet a Couatl. Ideally it's just a role-play encounter, but if it comes to combat I'd like the Couatal Star Serpent to be able to summon a few helpers (say as a minor action - a story-based power if the PC's trigger its anger).  I'm aiming for an encounter of around 13th level.  So the Couatl and Phoelarch seem OK, I'm just wondering if there's anything that's "quite Eberron" to round out a combat encounter should it be required. Any ideas most appreciated!
#2 rekko Aug 30, 2009 18:05:48	I think Devas are ok, but if you don't want to go with it you could summon some feathered yuan-ti (I think they were mention in a dragonshard article before DDI or in SoS) Maybe an angel? or a Dragon of appropriate level? Maybe a paladin of the silver flame?

The suggested allies listed in the MM2 (3 deva knights-errant + 1 phoelarch warrior) are OK, but I'm not sure if including Deva is the best idea, and I don't see any inspiration in the Eberron books(not that I'm an expert).    In Eberron, some Deva are aspects of the Silver Flame wrapped in Flesh.  The Silver Flame is the manifestation of the lives and devotion of many Coutals who sacrificed themselves in an attempt to bind away the Overlords of evil.   There is a very close relationship between Deva, Couatls, and the Slver Flame in Eberron.
#5 hastur_nz Jan 28, 2010 20:23:14	Thanks for the help so far.  I also have a further encounter coming up, where the PC's interact with a group of Couatl; if successful, they get given an artefact. As written, this encounter is pretty lame - the PC's have to answer a riddle, which seems a terrible way to qualify as heroes of legend. I think it would be more appropriate to have the PC's prove themselves in some other way, preferably not involving combat. For example the Couatl could ask a number of important questions about the campaign so far, in order to test whether the PC's are really the "heroes of the Prophecy" they have been waiting for (based on the pieces they know of The Prophesy). Not only is it a test for the players, but they are also reminded of a lot of important events in the story so far. But I don't really know how the Couatl relate to the Prophesy - I know the Dragons are really into the Prophesy, and the Couatl helped the Dragons bind the Demons, but what's the Couatl's relation to The Prophesy? Do they even care? So I'm looking for any help to refine and/or expand this idea and make it a useful encounter with some good Eberron flavour.  p.s. in the encounter I originally posted about, it turned out to be purely role-play (which was fine).
#6 veltharis_ap_rylix Jan 29, 2010 9:40:07	It was the combined effort of the blue wyrm Ourelonastrix and the couatl Hezcalipa that brought knowledge of the Draconic Prophecy to the dragons, so the couatls (and those who follow in their footsteps) have long had a stake in the battles of prophecy, just as the Lords of Dust and their masters do.
