Hey, I'm not terribly familiar with Eberron (beyond what I've seen from playing DDO), and I need to know about some of the more powerful crime syndicates in the setting. All I know of so far is the Sharn Syndicate (which I don't even think is canon, its from DDO) and the Arumn (which is not quite what I'm looking for - I'm looking more for the "mafias" of Eberron.)

So, can someone give me some names of the "mafias" of Eberron, and maybe some details if you've got them?

I know a few off the top of my head. They're all based in Sharn, but the Boroman Clan is considered by some the closest thing to a Mafia in Eberron. Other criminal outfits include house Tarkanan (an aberrant dragonmarked house, does thievery and assassination), Daask (a gang of monsters, likely created by one of the warlords of Droaam), and the Tyrants (I think it's a gang of doppelgangers). As far as outfits outside of Sharn, the Swords of Liberty is a network of terrorists that operate mainly in Breland, as I recall. I know there's a few others in other sourcebooks, but I can't remember at the moment.

For the most part, crime syndicates are all city-based, so you've got to start with what city you want your game to involve.  For example, in Fairhaven (capital of Aundair) you've got the Dark Daggers. Most mafia-style groups don't really span whole nations.  The Aurum may be the closest you get to that, but they're more like a greedy Illuminati-style group and less like the mob.

There is the The Cabinet of Faces, though; a cabal of doppelgangers and changelings who do try to manipulate governments.

So what's your city?

Excellent thread. This is bound to give me some ideas, especially since I was leaning toward starting in Sharn and we will probably have a Rogue in the party.

If you can get a hold of the Sharn, City of Towers sourcebook, it's pretty good at detailing the crime and corruption of Sharn.  The major gangs (Boramar, Tyrants, Daask, etc) have their own chapters, and most of the lore/fluff translates really well from 3.5 to 4e.

Just be prepared:  most of the entire book is just one giant fluff article, which you could end up needing an entire flow chart to remember who is connected to whom.
