| #1darth_serenousDec 08, 2008 9:04:51 | This is the setting idea I had by trying to satisfy my players taste. They don't like Eberron idea of high-tech and lots of powerful houses. So I decided to kill some traditional concepts of Eberron to fit it more to 4E concepts. Dark Ages of Eberron: by Darth_Serenous We are now in 1210 YK. Two centuries passed since the end of the second war. This war was named : the war of carnages. After being discovered as a vampire by some adventurers of Thrane, the king of Karrnath, Kaius III engaged a massive invasion against the Silverflame Saint City : Flamekeep. Unleashing his highly trained skeletons on Thrane, he failed at keeping peace between the 5 nations. Breaking the peace treaty, all nations engaged against Karrnath. But he was not alone. Helped with pirates from the Principalities and mercenaries from Talenta and Darguun, he destroyed the Saint city and most of the settlement around. Using the ancient castle he destroyed during the Last war, he used all the deadbody to enlarge his army. Because all monarch voted to destroyed the forges, most of the Warforged were ask to duty during this war. They were send as private to the frontline and most of them were killed. Others were turned to somekind of undead construct. Everything looks hopeless. But, the dwarves of Mror Holds attacked Karnnath from behind. But they also failed. Breland and Aiundair combined their spies and decided to organized a fake surrendering ceremony where assassins killed the King. During this time, cohort of Breland and Aiundair attacked the castles around. The new war last 10 years. The shortest conflict ever seen on Khorvaire. At the end, Kaius III and his entire army were destroy. But Aiundair, Thrane and north of Breland were left in ashes. Most of the economy crashed and the guild became very powerful. Being the carrier of the Dragonmark powers, they tried to bring glory and rightness on the surviving countries. But at what cost. 3 great monarchy were death, and most of the guilds controlled the population by fear. 2 century passed and the guilds grown and grown and someday the sun faded out. Shadowfell passed in front of the sun and eclipsed the sky. During a long 30 minutes, darkness covered the whole planet of Eberron. Dragonmark stopped to work, Dragonshards too. Lightning rail, flying ship and the misty wall around Mournlands fall and the light came back. Couple of days later, Dragonborn from Argonnessen, Eladrin from Sarlona, Tiefling from Demonwaste, Drow from Xendrik, Shadar-Kai from Khyber and Genasi from Siberys moved to Khorvaire. All of them told that their world were corrupted by Shadowfell. Now, a 30 years after the eclipse, players must protect the remains of an ancient and glorious world against the corruption of the Shadowfell. Some explanation : In my Eberron setting, I always assumed that Dragonmark powers came from the 12 moons around Eberron. What created the Mournlands was a fragment of the 13th moon, which is the Dragonmark of Death. I also see the planes like planets around Eberron and the Sun was very far away and is turning around Eberron too. Planes cast energy on Eberron when they past in front of the sun. Shadowfell is more like a huge planet that orbit in a very large arc and pass in front of the sun just once every 10 000 years. His influence was so great that it cut off the influence of the moons and covered Eberron with a dark layer for a short period of time. Enough to discharge the Dragonshard and the moons. So this setting talks about Eberron as I see it. But I want to know what you guys think? Any suggestions, adventure ideas etc. Oh and of course, feel free to correct my poor grammar and vocabulary. ^^ |
| #2skrapsanDec 08, 2008 11:47:48 | Well I really have nothing to add, but I will say that this is one of the cooler "future" versions of Eberron I have seen so far. At least to my tastes. Oh just one question, what did the dragons do about the eclipse? and what happened to the demons lords? |
| #3darth_serenousDec 08, 2008 17:23:17 | Thanks, I appreciate. For the Dragon, people of Khorvaire believe in their existence even if they haven't seen so far. Legends of the dragon are very old. Dragonborn actually ruled the continent since the fall of the dragon empire. Well thats the big idea, not sure yet. For demon lords, Im currently thinking about it. |
| #4nerdicusDec 08, 2008 19:24:28 | This is great! I am running a similar campaign right now. our campaign is 500 years in teh future, and the way that it got there is very different, but the end result is the same. I totally dig your idea of how to introduce the new races, and I will being adding a Shdowfell incursion to our game. It actually fits really well because I was already planning on taking the group to the planes for the paragon levels, and now I have a reason why. The Shadowfell is corrupting them all, and the heroes need to discover why and stop the SHadowfell from corrupting the entire Multiverse! A question: Do you still have dragonmarks and dragonmarked houses? Or have they totally been removed? |
| #5lonewolfDec 09, 2008 13:32:59 | Im not trying to troll here, but since you asked: That turn of events doesnt fit into my view of Eberron at all. Despite beeing an evil vampire monster, Kaius is one of the rulers which most support the peace. There are many ways that another all-out war could break out, but this isnt one of them IMHO. More likely causes for a start of a new war would be Aundair trying to recover either the Eledeen Reaches or Thaliost, New Cyre trying to break away from Breland, a civil war in Breland after King Boranels death, Darguun united under Dhakaani rule making a bid for more land, Thrane attacking Karrnath(not the other way around!) or The Lord of The Blades expanding his rule beyond the Mournland. Even a civil war in Karrnath with Kaius losing, turning Karrnath into a Blood of Vol theocracy and then attacking other nations seems more likely. The only way I can see Kaius acting the way you described it is if Erandis d´Vol somehow manages to gain control over him again. Kaius HATES beeing an undead. He tries to reduce his undead troops and thinks it was a big mistake to create them in the first place. The result of the war could be the same but I just dont see that trigger to be very fitting. |
| #6darth_serenousDec 09, 2008 18:05:49 | Dragonmarks still exists but have no effect. Dragonmark houses have lost their influence on the world because they are useless. I'm working on make one or two survived and trying to find a explanation and solution to this phenomena. Thats your way to see it, and I respect it. I prefer Kaius as somekind of Dracula that wants to conquer the world. |
| #7nerdicusDec 09, 2008 18:31:25 | I never thought that Kaius favored peace for peaces sake, but more because he saw that a continued war would mean the end of his nation. Of all the nations they were hit the hardest( excluding Cyre of course!) and his hold on the nation was his first thought. IMHO. As to the dragonmarks, you could have them come back again( but only for PCs) and make them extra things that you give out. Akin to magic itemsbut these will be magic marks. :D I'm going to have an enctouner soon for my players in which they all get something cool for free. Dragonmarks, aberrant marks, animal companions, familiars, epic items and mounts( cooler then horse mounts though). The idea for this is to give them something liek a dragonmark for free so that they can use it or not use it and not feel they wasted a feat on it. Our reason for the Eberron Dark Ages is some great event that spun the world into darkness. I have purposefully left it open so that I can weave the reason or it into the story at later levels. But basically an outer planer event that shook the multiverse or something. |

Of all the nations they were hit the hardest( excluding Cyre of course!) and his hold on the nation was his first thought. IMHO. Well, in my idea it was kinda same. Lack of foods for his people forced him to surrender to the peace area. But Kaius turned mad. In a ancient campaign, I planned the players to become puppet of Silverflame church and make them force Karrnath to declare war. So Im acting like it happened and Karrnath attacked. A player proposed that instead of making the misty wall of Mournland disapear with the eclipse, I just make it surround the world at large and make it dark and shadowy. I was thinking about a dark world, but one of my players suggest that I make this literally darker. I don't know yet. But I like this idea. |
| #9skrapsanDec 09, 2008 22:58:28 | A player proposed that instead of making the misty wall of Mournland disapear with the eclipse, I just make it surround the world at large and make it dark and shadowy. This is not a bad thing, but it screams a bit of Ravenloft to me, you know stealing the cool stuff from the setting etc etc. |

So I decided to kill some traditional concepts of Eberron to fit it more to 4E concepts. I think I will be stealing some of your ideas, and the 13th dragonmark fueling Cyre's destruction would be a better fit than my previous idea. I think I will tie them in together. |
| #11darth_serenousDec 11, 2008 13:14:33 | This is not a bad thing, but it screams a bit of Ravenloft to me, you know stealing the cool stuff from the setting etc etc. Yeah but : Tips from the Pros So.. ^^ |
| #12skrapsanDec 12, 2008 1:07:35 | Yeah but : Well I see now in hindsight that I did not express myself all that clearly. I really like what you did, and it was cool with the added Ravenloft/domains of dread feel. Im not a Ravenloft player myself, but have been toying with the idea of addind certain traits from it to Eberron myself. Anyway, enoug ranting, great idea, love the Ravenloft elements of it. |
| #13darth_serenousDec 12, 2008 5:32:37 | Thanks. I don't even know Ravenloft, thats what's great. My player don't know Eberron nor Ravenloft. They just stick to FR since long ago. And I decided to bring them into somewhere there is no almighty Elminster. |
| #14skrapsanDec 13, 2008 4:02:19 | Well Ravenloft is a horror setting were everything is evil and wants to eat you in the darkness. The most striking feature of the setting is the mist. It follows the borders of the world and if you walk into it there is no knowing where you might end up. And every country is controlled by a dread lord (read ancient and evil dude trapped in his own personal nightmare world/prison for his evil acts. You may find more general info here. So that is how I'm going to use it, if you walk into the Mournland you might end up in the ravenloft setting or something similar, only I planed to use the maps of Cyre from its glory days. |
| #15darth_serenousDec 13, 2008 7:43:43 | Nice, new saves..mmm. Maybe I use them too. Will see. I decided to left the mist covering the world idea behind. Instead, I think the sun is just a little less shiny than before. Due to Shadowfell corruption. For the first adventure. Starting level 6. I want them to go to the ancient observatory because an Wizard told them that this happen before and the observatory maybe have some infos on what happened. Im still working on it. |
| #16darth_serenousDec 14, 2008 7:05:55 | Oh, just got a problem here and need suggestions. What you guys suggest to explain the existence of Dragonborn as little community and even tribes? Maybe they were here before? Like 50 years before the eclipse so 80 years before the campaign start). I think 80 years give a plenty of time for a race to settle and create some community. Or, should I just double every element of time line? |
