I believe sir, that you haven't realized there is a 3.5 Eberron book, which will basically have most of it's fluff carried over to the 4e version of the setting.

But yes, they are found in the planes, doing the same things other devils do. They fight with angels and demons on Syrrania (sp?). They might plot against mortals, but why? Unless someone has been binding many of them, they won't have a reason to leave their immortal conflicts. They may want to free Rajahs because they're the ultimate evils of the setting should they find themselves on the Material Plane.

Aren't they supossed to need mortals for their souls? Soul power is the main reason they would willingly aid mortals. Spreading suffering and evil would be a close second. Maybe an exiled or weak prince want's to build a power base before returning home. Maybe it founds it's own Cult of the Dragon Below and has it's followers find a way to release it from it's prison. Maybe a devil needs mortals to help it complete a epic ritual to release the children of Khyber and bring about another age of demons/devils.That way they don't need to trick mortals in to selling their souls they can just take them.

Plus doesn't it say somewhere that "devils wan't to rule the world, while demons wan't to destroy it"? So the demons try to destroy everthing and the devils ally with and manipulate mortals to prevent the destruction of the world so that they can conquer it.And collect as many souls as possible. Are you happy now?

Devils and Demons in Eberron are immortal beings, unlike in normal settings. They can't be "killed" and don't require sustenance, which I'd assume includes souls. The ones that come to the Material Plane are usually those who a wizard summoned, and given Eberrons general low-level, this is rare.

As Mystrich says the vast majority of devils in Eberron are on Shavarath engaged in a perpetual war with Demons and Angels (I don't have my books in front of me but if I remember rightly they constantly switch sides, operating as mercenaries rather than it being a three-way free for all).

Some devils have left Shavarath for reasons of their own e.g. they're fugitives or exiles and these are the beings that would work best for setting up the traditional devil worshipping cults in Eberron. These exiles are also likely to join the Lords of Dust and work towards that group's ends: freeing the Rajahs.

And then their are the devils that have always been a part of the Lords of Dust. The progenitor wyrms created all the planes and the fiends of The Age of Demons contained both the devils and demons found in the monster manual, just not in great numbers and their would be none of the old lore regarding rivalry between devils and demons with the Eberron fiends.

Actually, they are one of the main factions in Shavarath. The thing is that they often allied with their lawful counterparts (the Archons) to deal with their evil counterpart (the demons), or viceversa, and then they usually betrayed them.

They didn't existed in Syrania and the fiends from the dragon below don't really include devils nor demons that would appear in Shavarath, that's something we discused with Hellcow.

But, first of all, Shavarath is gotta change now that archons have changed. Secondly, I'm interesting in what do you think that devils would care about from the mortal world.

You guys are using 3.5? They would use souls to fuel infernal weponary. And in 4e devils are immortal.Demons and rakshasa aren't. So I give a couple what if's for why devils would get involved and all you guys did was copy from the books? Why ask in the first place?

Rakshasas are different in Eberron. They're immortal beings composed on pure evil created at the beginning of time itself. Once killed, a fiend reforms on it's home plane, including Rakshasas who reform in Khyber (the more done to ensure it's destruction, the longer it takes. Killing it might take it out for a few days, a Holy weapon a week or more, and as the Dragon article on them states, a Holy weapon, on consecrated ground could take it out even longer.

They didn't existed in Syrania

Ya, sorry. Didn't have my book, and couldn't remember the plane name.

Well, that's kind of the basic stuff. Give me something more special. Something more... Eberron. Please:D

Thanks anyway.

I've always sort of "thrown out" any core fluff for devils and demons when dealing with Eberron. I use both devils and demons (Monster Manual/statistically speaking) to represent the fiends of Eberron.

The deceitful, calculating, manipulative qualities of the devils just scream "Lords of Dust", in my opinion. I've never concerned myself too much with what the demons and devils of the other planes are doing, and have relegated them to their more core/stereotypical non-Eberron DnD roles.

It's been far too long since I've last read my ECS and/or been an active member of the Eberron community here to provide a specific reference, but I do believe I read somewhere that this approach, though never spelled-out, was the original intent of the creators/designers. I could be way off and completely imagining this, and if so, they visit these boards frequently enough to set me straight if that's the case.

I think it's more likely Shavarath's Archons might get renamed. That, or the new 4e Archons will get named something else. The Fire Archons and Ice Archons might simply get turned into native creatures of Fernia and Risia, respectively.

I like to use devils as Khyber-spawn sometimes, who are all about corrupting mortals for their fell masters beneath. I believe they show a good example of this with the first book in the 'Heirs of Ash' trilogy.

Devils who have been called by an unprepared and foolish wizard (or maybe one that stumbles through a temporary manifest zone) probably aren't be concerned with the politics of the Material, but they may want to gain as much power while on the Material before returning to battle. And as they're pretty much immortal, their plans could take quite some time to play out, taking over a church or inspiring a cult with aspirations of harvesting the souls / life energy of the followers.

I don't have the book on me, but despite the name "Demon Wastes," I'm wondering if most of the foul denizens of that place aren't actually devils rather than demons.

I'm sure I've stated this elsewhere but a little repetition is a good thing I hope. In my home campaign I've divided the evil thingy-ma-bobs thus. Rakshasa kick it in Eberron proper as per the campaign backstory. Devils are divided into two groups, those that are also the spawn of Khyber (usually working for some Rakshasa Lord of Dust) and those that battle it out in Shavarath. Demons are again divided into two groups, those that fight in Shavarath (reflecting the eternal conflict between good and evil, law and chaos, Khyber and Siberys) and those that serve the Dark Six. Finally your NE stuff (Yugoloth) act as they always have, as mercenaries for the highest bidder.

I think Keith posted it somewhere on the boards a while ago that the term Demon Wastes reflects that general knowledge/belief of the people of Khoirvaire. To joe citizen anything evil is "by the Sovereigns, it's a Demon!", whereby the demon responds in an urbane cultured voice "Actually sir I happen to be a Rakshasa, just for clarification", before disembowling the mortal for his ignorance and impudence ;) . So yes to answer your question AG the Demon Wastes are inhabited for the most part by Rakshasa (LE), some devils (again LE) and Night Hags (NE with soy sauce).

Nicely put. I think though that if any setting would warrant using "Tanar'ri" and "Baatezu" as alternative names for Demons and Devils, Eberron would.

Just because FR fit in 4E fluff into their world does not mean Eberron will. If you have nothing positive to add just stay on the FR boards. ;)

To OP :In my campaign devils are in the standard places that the 3.5 supplements say they are. I do have a specific devil of great power that settled on an island millennia ago. He assisted the elves that were escaping Xendrick as well as other cultures that were about to meet their "doom". He saved them but only if they would make a deal with him, to be turned into Tieflings and owe him a "favor". The favor is simply that they report to him everything they find once they leave the island and go to the other continents.

These tieflings are to keep their place of origin quiet. If they spill the beans or are about to they meet a violent end right on the spot.

There is no known reason why the "Bargainer" has done all of this, his grand plan for all of the tieflings is yet unknown.

Rauric,

Hmm... interesting idea. The so tiefling in your campaing are elves?

So far I've decided that for some reason I want devils to be really involved into this campaing I'm running. And in this case I'm not talking about Rakshasa, I'm talking about Baatezu. In part because I think that a Rakshasa-Baatezu conflict where the PC's end up having to ally with either would be great.
Ok, my general toughts so far about devil and fiends in general is this:
· Tar'nari and Baatezu fight in Shavarath. They are not related with each other above that and by default are not related with other fiends in other planes
· Rakshasas and their minions are native to eberron
· Fernia and Risia each have their powerful fiends but many of this ones came a long time ago from Shavarath or from Eberron or something (for example, I had this idea in which Pit Fiends and Balors are mephits touched by darkness... but since there's no mephit anymore that idea could change)
Quite shortly, every plane has it's own dark creatures and stuff. But just as the Daelkyr and the Quori had been interested in Eberron, so can the Baatezu be.

I'll tell you the plot I've thought so far for my campaing:
There's this Dhakaani hobgoblin warchief (or maybe a female bard) that is leading a clan that wants (you guessed) to rebuild the Dhakaani empire. As we know, the Dhakaani clans all want that but can't unite under one banner because the can't agree (and won't agree by good means) who's going to reing. That's what has kept Haruuk protected in his throne.
But this guys from this clan, lets call it the Bringers for now, are quite luckier than the rest. The dedicate a lot of time to recovering their culture and their relics and in one of those expeditions they found an artifact of incredible might. This artifact was capable, among other things, of capturing incredibly powerful beings of other planes. The last thing they used it for was to capture an ascendant councilior while she was in astral proyection.
The Bringers did this to put the family of the councilior, and a great part of the Undying Court, to their service while they secretetly exploted Aerenal for resources.
Other people implied are:
- The Blansha Sisters: The Bringers wanted their work on Aerenal to be secret because that was part of the deal that was made with the guard and the UC clerics of the family of the captured councilior. So, they allied with a trio of white dragons know as the Blansha sisters that would happidly destroy all their campments and all witnesses in the island simply because they hate elves (and for some other secret reason, of course, this is eberron)
- The Chamber: Obviously, the fact that such a powerful artifact has returned is a concern for the dragons, so they have placed a spy on the Bringers: the middle sister of the Blansha sisters (lets call her Bralathare) is actually plotting for the doom of this Dhakaani tribe's plan. But, as is written in the prophecy, she can't just kill their boss and steal their artifact because that would do some kind of major doom. Oh! Did I mentioned that this artifact is very strongly related to the beginning of the Daelkyr invation?
- Some Valenar Clan: I haven't tought so much on this, but I've already gave my PCs the idea that there's a Valenar clan and a part of the Valenar government working in favor of the Dhakaani. Probably, the thing will be that Haruuk is a common enemy for both groups.
- Some Baatezu: I have already place Imps speaking among the valenar and the Bringers. But I haven't quite figured some sort of "Wow! That I didn't expected!" reason for them to be doing so. So far, I think that the Dhakaani first tried to capture a Baatezu and/or the fiends are interested in the power that this artifact would give them in their war on Shavarath. Or perhaps they want the Dhakaani to rebuild the empire with a little more devil worshiping.
- Some gnome(s) elemental binder: This one I'm sure, but I gotta work it out. The Bringers have made an arrangement with some very good elemental binders in Zilargo so that they can get a good lot of elemental vehicles. They have already used a couple of Tumblers to deforest some places in Aerenal without creating paths. Why are this binders helping the Dhakaani? I think it's because the artifact they've got is really interesting for elemental binding.
- House Thuranni (or phiarlan): Well, they want to know everything, right? And the Bringer's Warchief does see potential on the Dragonmarked houses for helping to build an empire. He see's it mainly because...
- House Deneith: ... he once worked for Deneith. And well, that sort of potentially puts it in the middle.
- Lhesh Haruuk: a practically for sure ally of the PCs in the future. He's the one big enemy of the Dhakaani after all.

So, I wanted a little more ideas about devils in eberron to see if I can figure this all out.

One group of tieflings are elves and other "lost" civilizations that time has forgotten.
